The Courier Mail guy on Twitter is saying Cooper has given a guarantee to RedsRugby tonight that he will see out his 3 year contract with them regardless of ARU dealings

Just like Will Genia's verbal agreement to come to the Force before the most rousing rendition of a team song this side of Broadway?

Could be that Cooper is not best pleased at having to play under their new coach and is trying to find an out!

Ok, maybe Tic can justify the Genia backflip as being about some mythical notion of team loyalty and the quality of the program, however a backflip of that magnitude stinks of under the table payments.

Let's not forget, this guy is managed by the don king of rugby managers. Khoder Nasser would never let Cooper make a move which will hurt his precious commission.

But, but, but you can't box with somebody else standing in front of you to take the punches can you?

But isn't it that the ARU have to ratify any Super Rugby contracts? So if the ARU withdraw Cooper's contract does that nullify the contract with the Reds?

good point Sheikh. I am led to believe there IS no "contract" until the ARU ratifies it. Nothing to do with player top ups.

As a sideline, "as if" Cooper will play for a portion of his usual wage. That really IS taking the pi$$

That's what I thought too Sheikh, hence my confusion!

I can't see Cooper agreeing to a lower top-up from the ARU just so he can pull on the red jersey again next season?? (That's assuming, of course, that the ARU are willing to keep him on at all!!)

Then again, we mustn't forget about the magical and mystical magnetisim of THAT team song.......

Question: does the ARU have to ratify every S15 contract, or just those of the Wallaby contingent? I'm assuming the former??

The former, but the ARU would be insane not to ratify a contract with no top up for a current Wallaby, no matter how fcuked in the head he is.

Basically you keep him in rugby, keep bums on seats in Queensland don't have the bad pr that associates a code switch and he remains eligible for the wallabies on match payments if you want him.

On Quade's side of the ledger, he gets to play the rugby he likes, he gets to sing a team song and get pissed every September and probably doesn't lose a cent (because anybody who thinks he'd sign that deal for a loss given his current injury status is arguing from Disneyland)

Win win in a lot of ways......but what do we win?

Press is reporting a number of RL clubs have knocked back ANY approaches by Cooper's management. Like I said earlier he is being valued there @ around $200 G a year. It's looking like the ARU may be significantly lowering his top-up to reflect his current form and fitness situation. As they should. He's using social media to chuck a hissy fit over it. That's what happens when you "back yourself" on short term contracts, don't measure up, then ask for 3 years on comparable terms.

    Yup

Maybe those mungo scouts do know more about the game than a bunch of spectators on a union forum.

The only one who seems to be in the dark about what it takes to play NRL is Quade Cooper himself.

It appears the move to play reds with no top up is him having painted himself into a corner...he can't sign overseas, because he has a club contract, he can't sign locall because he's shit in the pool, I would like to see the ARU drag the ratification of his contract out as long as legally possible just to teach him and all the other wankers who've pulled ridiculous bullshit in negotiations a lesson!
