Two Argies up for world award
From correspondents in Paris
October 09, 2007
ARGENTINA'S advance to a first World Cup semi-final was recognised when Pumas pair Felipe Contempomi and Juan Martin Hernandez were announced as two of the five nominees for the 2007 International Rugby Board (IRB) Player of the Year award.
Centre Contepomi and fly half Hernandez have both played key roles in Argentina's rise to fourth in the IRB's world rankings and were involved in the 19-13 quarter-final defeat of Scotland that saw the Pumas book a last four World Cup clash against South Africa in Paris on Sunday.
Also up for the award are Springbok wing Bryan Habana and French centre Yannick Jauzion, whose try against New Zealand sealed his side's dramatic 20-18 World Cup quarter-final victory against the tournament favourite in Cardiff on Saturday.
That win secured a semi-final against old rival England this weekend at the Stade de France.
New Zealand captain and flanker Richie McCaw, last year's winner, was the only forward to make the shortlist.
The selection panel was made up entirely of former internationals, including New Zealand great Michael Jones, a World Cup winner in 1987, Will Greenwood, the former England centre who starred in his country's World Cup triumph four years ago, Francois Pienaar, who captained South Africa to the trophy in 1995, and convener John Eales, Australia's World Cup winning captain in 1999.
The winners will be announced on October 21, the day after the World Cup final, at a ceremony in Paris.

"Remember lads, rugby is a team game; all 14 of you make sure you pass the ball to Giteau."
Jeez, Contepomi would have to be short-priced for that wouldn't he?

Political correctness is a doctrine, fostered by a delusional, illogical minority, and rabidly promoted by an unscrupulous mainstream media, which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a turd by the clean end.
hernadez should win.
what the hell has bryan habana done, if he is there then they need south african centres that give him so many chances.

Thank you TIF. Jazza, some of the tries Habana has pulled of this year have been remarkable to say the very least and he deserves to be nominated. Saying this I really can't see a winner out of that lot, they have all had an outstanding year of rugby. I think the next few games will show who the winner should be. (not in Richies case though haha)
Every forwards dream is to become a back...
Nice backhander for the Kiwis Shaun. Also nice to see a post without any reference to the yapies.![]()

Felipe Contepomi's chances would have slipped after that punch, so stupid. I think Bryan may be leading the pack after the game.

My money would be on Habana
I made Happy sad...
That first try of his in the semi showed just how classy Habana is.
Bryan has my vote too.
Habana named player of the year
From correspondents in Paris
October 22, 2007
SOUTH Africa wing Bryan Habana has been named the International Rugby Board player of the year after helping the Springboks clinch the Rugby World Cup title.
Habana, 24, scored eight tries to finish as the tournament's top scorer, equalling the record set by New Zealand's Jonah Lomu at the 1999 edition.
Jake White was meanwhile named coach of the year and the Springboks won were named team of the year title after finishing the tournament, in which they clinched victory with a 15-6 win over England in the final, undefeated.
The honour caps a golden year for Habana, who also won the Super 14 title with the Bulls.
He succeeds New Zealand players Richie McCaw, in 2006, and Dan Carter, in 2005, as the player of the year.
France centre Yannick Jauzion, Argentina duo Juan Martin Hernandez and Felipe Contepomi and McCaw had been among the nominees selected by a jury made up of former international players.
