Injured Horgan named in Irish World Cup squad; Bowe to travel as possible replacement

DUBLIN, Ireland (AP) - Shane Horgan was included in Ireland's rugby World Cup squad Sunday despite needing a month's rest after twisting his knee in the warmup to the team's 31-21 loss to Scotland.
The 193-centimeter (6-foot-3) winger had been named among the replacements for Saturday's friendly at Murrayfield, but injured knee ligaments before the kickoff.
«Shane's injury means a four-week layoff, depending on his healing powers,» coach Eddie O'Sullivan said. «That puts him in with a chance of making the second pool game against Georgia.
«Whether he makes that deadline we have set him is another matter, but we're giving him every chance. He's a good healer and we believe he can make that.
Ulster winger Tommy Bowe will travel with the 30-man squad for the Sept. 7-Oct. 20 World Cup in France as a replacement if Horgan doesn't overcome his injury.
«Bowe will stay with the squad until we get more data on Shane,» O'Sullivan said. «Keeping our options open is the best we can do at the moment. Shane is a 50-50 chance to make the Georgia match. We'll know more over the next couple of weeks, so we may make a decision sooner.
Brian Carney, a winger who converted from rugby league five months ago, is included in the squad that includes 15 players from the 2003 World Cup in Australia.
Brian O'Driscoll, one of the game's best centers, will captain the team, which faces group matches against Namibia, Georgia, France and Argentina.

Ireland Rugby World Cup Squad Announcement

Coach Eddie O’Sullivan today named the 30-man Ireland squad that will take part in the 2007 Rugby World Cup in France. Read on for further details.

The squad contains a split of 16 forwards and 14 backs for the tournament. The forward contingent contains four props with Marcus Horan, John Hayes, Bryan Young and Simon Best all being named in the squad. There are three hookers also included with Jerry Flannery, who started yesterday’s game against Scotland, Rory Best and Frankie Sheahan completing the front row players.

There are three second rows in the squad with Paul O’Connell and Donncha O’Callaghan joined by Ireland’s most-capped player Malcolm O’Kelly, who will be competing in his third World Cup tournament.

The highly competitive back row area sees Neil Best, Stephen Ferris and Alan Quinlan join Denis Leamy, David Wallace and Simon Easterby in the final squad.

In the backs division, Peter Stringer, Isaac Boss and Eoin Reddan are named as the three specialist scrum-halves, with Ronan O’Gara and Paddy Wallace confirmed as the two specialist out-halves.

The selection of the outside backs was complicated by the injury to Shane Horgan during the warm-up against Scotland yesterday. Horgan has been diagnosed with a knee ligament strain but following a scan this morning in Dublin, he has been named in the squad.

The prognosisis is that he may miss some of the games in the pool stages but may recover to take part in the tournament. In addition to Horgan, Gordon D’Arcy, Gavin Duffy, Denis Hickie, Andrew Trimble, Brian Carney, Girvan Dempsey and Geordan Murphy are named. The final name in the squad is that of Brian O’Driscoll, who has been named as Ireland's captain for the tournament.

Ireland coach Eddie O’Sullivan said: "This was one of the toughest moments of my coaching career to select this 30-man squad. The players in the enlarged World Cup squad have all worked their guts out in pre-season and this has been the case throughout the camps over the last number of weeks.

“Unfortunately we were always going to be limited to 30 players and some very hard decisions had to be made by myself and Niall O’Donovan. The Scotland game yesterday solved some of the selection issues in the back row and also the back three and after four years of preparation, we are now on the run-in to the tournament.

"One part of the challenge for the players is behind them by getting selected. The challenge for us all now is to compete and be as successful as we can be in the tournament."

The 30-man Ireland squad and management team will depart today for Capbreton in the south of France for a five-day warm weather camp, before returning to Belfast to prepare for their final warm-up game against Italy at Ravenhill on Friday, August 24.

Ok based on the above how do you rate their chances of :
A: Getting out of the Pool of Death Group D ie beating either Argentina or France
B: IF they get to the quarters beating NZ in France (disallowing an outbreak of food poisoning)

I think that all three of them are equal chance to top that Pool "on their day".
Perhaps France slightly ahead as the home team.
Ireland have plenty of experience playing in France from 6N but the Argies have plenty of individual experience playing for French Clubs as well...
With current IRB Rankings of 3rd, 5th and 6th it is obviously the tightest of the Pools.

I think they have zero chance of beating NZ in France though sorry TQ1, they will need to come first in the Pool to advance to the Semi's.
