The life of Rugby great Trevor Allan OAM has been honoured with the striking of a Cup that will be the focus of Sydney club Rugby's post Tooheys New Shute Shield first grade competition.

The Trevor Allan cup was officially unveiled in front of club Rugby luminaries at NSW Rugby's annual Grand Final luncheon at Eastern Suburbs Rugby Club.

The new five-round competition will begin on Saturday, 4 August and will feature all 12 Sydney clubs.

Teams will be split into North and South pools, with the top teams from each to meet in the final at Concord Oval on Saturday 8 September.

"Trevor Allan will go down as one of the true greats and it was high time his legacy was honoured in this way," NSWRU Chief Executive Officer Jim L'Estrange said.

"It was always a high priority for first grade competition in Sydney to continue into September and the Trevor Allan Cup guarantees this.

"The Cup will now take pride of place among people who are cut from the same kind of cloth he was.

"I'm personally looking very forward to the start of play and I think it will be highly competitive."

Trevor Allan OAM passed away in January at the age of 80.

He made his debut for NSW at the age of 19 in 1946 and later that year was selected to tour New Zealand with the Wallabies.

He would eventually play 17 matches for the Waratahs, with 11 of those as captain, while he led the Wallabies in 10 of his 14 Tests after assuming the captaincy aged just 21 on the 1947-48 tour of Great Britain.

A switch from Rugby Union into the professional Rugby League ranks in 1950 saw him achieve further success before injury brought a premature end to his career.

"When 'Tubby' went professional I cried for a week," former team-mate and Australian Rugby icon David Brockhoff said.

"He meant that much to the game at the time and now and it is just a wonderful honour to have a trohpy named after him."

After his retirement Allan was the face of the ABC's Rugby Union coverage for 27 years.

The inaugural Trevor Allan Cup competition will kick off on August 4, with Parramatta playing Easts, Randwick at home to Southern Districts, and West Harbour taking on Sydney University in the South side of the draw.

In the North, Gordon take on Eastwood in week one, while Penrith is away to Warringah and Norths play Manly in a north of the harbour derby.
