The John Eales Medal
FOX Sports 1
09:30 pm - 10:30 pm (EST)
Monday July 23 2007
The evening includes new inductees in the Wallaby Hall of Fame and presentation of rugby awards such as Try of the Year, Rookie of the Year and the John Eales Medal.
This year it will also feature the naming of the 30 Man Wallaby Squad for the 2007 Rugby World Cup.
The Australian Rugby Union ("ARU") and The Rugby Union Players' Association ("RUPA") jointly launched this prestigious award in 2002 to honour the game's best players.
Voting for the John Eales Medal is tallied after each Test Match, with each Wallaby player awarding points on a 3-2-1 basis.
RUPA Chief Executive Tony Dempsey says it's fitting that the John Eales Medal refelcts the judgement of the Wallaby Players.
"This is the ultimate award. To be voted the best in your country by your own peers is the highest honour a player can hope to aspire to. Naming this award after Australia's most successful captain ever is fully endorsed by the Players. This has become one of the most sought after and coveted awards in Australian sport."
Winners:
Chris Latham - 2006
Jeremy Paul - 2005
David Lyons - 2004
Phil Waugh - 2003
George Smith - 2002
Wallaby flanker George Smith won rugby's inaugural John Eales Medal, after being judged the team's most valuable player by his fellow Wallabies. On wining the award George said "To be selected by the players is a huge compliment."
