The ball had come to rest in the field of play. This type of play only results in our feed when the ball is caught whilst in touch. the spirit of the law is something like 'the ball is likely to go out anyway, you are simply playing at the ball to ensure it does so. just like a player in touch may play at the ball to prevent it going out in that situation. there is an inherent balance to the rule when applied this way that is lost if you allow what Huxley did (unless you allow in-touch players to retrieve the ball from touch)

This would imply to me that Huxley was in the right - when he was standing in touch and placed his hands on the ball, he made the ball dead.

Yeah, nah, he didn't touch it, he picked it up. That be the difference. Touching it means just that. Not catching it or picking it up, just a touch.

hey wasn't backchatting, just trying to understand the laws

What if I phrased the question as "did he touch it, or did the ball roll into his hands while he was out?"

At what point does a "touch" turn into "picking it up"?
Surely a "touch" proceeds picking it up, there for the rule has already been envoked?
What happens if he went to pick it up but was a gump like Baxter and bobbled it before taking possesion?
