Who knows about greywater use in gardens?

I'm trying to find out if there is any legislation or Australian Standards with regards to the use of domestic greywater for reticulation purposes. Anybody got any clues or advice? The plumbing standards don't appear to cover it.

Its in the Health standards TEF......I'll see if I can find for you by tonight.

I think its mostly to do with non aerosol use....ie you can spray it has to be underground trickle and some amount of treatment prior to use.

Your neighbour Kim will also have details because they are doing that for the community garden organised by the Residents Group.

Larry, we live in a desert, which is getting drier as a result of the inaction over the Kyoto Agreement and climate change denial by the two most useless Governments in the world, yours and ours.

As pathetic as it sounds, recycling kitchen, laundry and bathwater can mean the difference at best between having a few plants in the garden or not, and at worst having enough water for our animals to drink.

I don't know much about your government so I can't comment on it, but I certainly agree the ours is useless. Although not because of our refusal to accept the Kyoto Agreement. We have very strict emissions standards. Just this year they got stronger for diesel engines, adding anywhere from $3000 - $10,000 to the cost of a new truck. They will get even stronger in 2010. When the air coming out of the engine is actually cleaner than the air going in.

We have similar problems in the Southwest part of our country. What I could never understand was why we build cities in the desert?

    grey matter

i believe untreated greywater use in the garden can cause long term problems for soil quality.
your not trying to divert attention from the brown spot on the lawn that you try to blame on the dog are you?
look up "guinness burns" in the lawn section of the latest yates book.

TEF - no matter how much you water your lawn, it won't grow.....don't you remember the fake-grass installers coming to your house recently?!

TEF, there are 12 systems at the moment that are sanctioned by the WA government.. or who ever controls that...

The water that comes out of the system had been filtered, is orderless, and is perfectly safe for garden use. Just don't go drinking it

The only other way to use grey water is by filling up a bucket from which ever source you feel necessary, because it is a direct transport, and if the government catches you doing it any other way i believe there are hefty fines.

I find it kind of amazing that we speak of things on this forum, and then the conversation we are involved in somehow becomes a current affairs topic, or news, or debated...
Usually it relates to rugby, but often obscure items such as greywater use somehow are frontpage news after we talk online about it...The government is now mandating that all new homes built in WA after sept i believe, are to have greywater systems installed and rainwater tanks and other green options like solar water etc...
    kinda spooky isn't it...

Well where else would they find such rich seams of discussion amongst highly intelligent individuals?
