    Talking Team Names

Is it just me or does Australia have the poorest performance when picking Rugby Team names??

I mean look at our Super 14 teams - we have a flower, a colour (with a cuddly animal as the symbol), an introduced pest and a noun/verb (albeit a POWERFUL noun/verb!)

In SA they have 4 fearsome animals and a powerful menacing weather phenomenon!

In NZ they have 2 spurious references to historic Britain (once again powerful and meanacing however), another weather pattern, a local reference to strong indigenous leadership and............a colour (oh well 4 from 5 ain't bad)

Even our national side gets a cute and cuddly marsupial! - and not even the largest variety at that. (although NZ gets another colour reference and SA has probaly the bottom of the food chain in the safari park!)

Don't know much about the team names for the NH but I think the Poms copped a pretty garden flower and the Frogs get (yet another!) colour.

    Just a bit of fun.........

the aussie teams names give other teams a false sense of comfort, with cuddly names etc. Then the aussies come out and smash em

You're pretty screwed if you're allergic to flowers.

I've drunk with a Lone Hydgrangea - good fun!!

And most Hurricane's I've seen always dissapate into a low pressure systems and die off ... quite like the All Blacks at rugby world cups!!

That has got to be the worst argument Iīve ever heard. I was thinking about this the other day and I seriously think its the other teams with Chump names.

The Brumbiesī name is a reference to a glorious past of frontier lands and the man from Snowy river. The Waratah is the state flower for NSW and yes it is a flower, but is anyone else bold enough to have a flower? Is anyone else passionate about their state to make it their icon? An as to the Force, yes, the name may not have the same kind of meaning. But I personally think that the black swan in the shape of a rugby ball is beautiful. Very West Australian. Only the Reds lack imagination in my opinion but maybe the QL faithful will say otherwise.

South Africa? Blow that- show some originality. In the Super 14 and Currie Cup almost every team is named after an animal. Boring!

New Zealand? Blues- pah, Chiefs- I suppose its reasonable, Hurricanes- ok, Crusaders- what the hell?, Highlanders- passable.

The name isnīt what you should be afraid of. Itīs the passion behind the name.

Opinions always accepted - I did however state it was a bit of fun.........but some want to take it seriously. Traditionally in sport the name was to signify the awe or menace and the power or speed.

I didn't question anyones passion or "our" swan/rugby ball ..............but their you have it!

I was neutral on the name "Force" at first but it's grown on me since and now I reckon it's great. The players are pretty passionate about it already

But I think the black swan emblem is supposed to be in the shape of a cyclone. It looks a bit like Wellington's hurricane.

I would still have prefered a "better" name than the Force.
It's my team, I'm proud of the team yadda yadda yadda but I still hate the name.
It gives nothing for the supporters to use, is a mongrel to try and get into any supporter song and is generally crap.
As for flowers, the only acceptable flower for an Australian man to wear on his chest is a poppy or wedding rose, the rest are for nancy boys...

Given WA's lack of fearsome creatures - "sharks" is gone, I don't think much of "snakes" and the only acceptable spider is gone - care to reveal your preference? I'm sure it's out there among those nearly 6000 posts, but humour me.

I'm kinda luke warm on "Spirit" too but maybe that'll grow on me as well.
