1: Neddies 3 Win U19's Div 2 Sevens Tournament
19-03-2007

On Sunday 11 March, a motley crew of colts banded together to lift the Div 2 RugbyWA Sevens title and set the standard for the upcoming season. Most of the lads had never played together prior to Sunday but it did not show.

Led by “Goose Step” Sauer the team had a convincing first up win against a gallant Curtin Billy Goats side running out 31-5 victors. “Sonny Bill” Nani, Zac “Flash” Holmes, Billy “Wizz” Cooper and “Dummy Spit” Dullard all scored after a couple of monstrous and somewhat armless hits by our own Sonny Bill set the Goats looking rattled. It was the first game in Neddies colors for a number of players including our imported Zimbabwean front row pairing of the Ox Pringle-Wood and Baby Ox Butler, Mike Tyson McLuchie, Ranga Gilchrist and “Paddy” Ireland.

The Second game, against our old foe Cottesloe was a far tougher assignment but again the confidence and talent on display in the opening fixture saw the boys crash home 13-12 with some great work from Mike “Tyson” and a great show and go from Goose Step Sauer who is determined to play in the centers this year…. NOT!!

The win saw the team head to the semi finals where we came up against Neddies 4 who put up a gallant fight but were over run in the end with a stunning performance from Zacc Flash and Billy Wizz and solid work from the Zimbo Oxen. The final score was immaterial though the #3 team progressed to the final.

After most of the team had been at Perry Lakes for 9 hours we finally met Associates and once the lads realized that they were playing for 10 cartons of beer, any tiredness soon vanished. With Sonny Bill Nani asked politely to leave the field after the first two minutes, for introducing a Soaks player to the turf a tad roughly, the rest of the team fired up with all players especially Ranga Gilchrist, Paddy Ireland and the ever present Flash Holmes causing mayhem. The final score should have been 58-0 though it was somewhat less but the beers are coming home. Flash was awarded the player of the Div 2 comp and rightly so with 7 tries to his name in three games.

It was a great day for the whole colts squad and with the depth of talent on display we should be in for a cracking season as we look forward to winning more flags and representative honors this year. Well done to everyone in the #3 team and thanks to everyone who helped organize a fun day.

1: The first two Intra Club Trials were a huge success, with our newly assembled teams squaring off. Of course the score board was irrelevant but we did get to see some fluent and hard hitting rugby. Our third and final pre-season trial will be against WA Country in Albany.

Rockingham: www.rockinghamrufc.rugbynet.com.au

1: Colts on top against Mandurah.

Sunday, 25 March 2007

In a pre-season match played against Mandurah Colts at Rockingham on Saturday, the Rocky boys proved far too strong, and were clearly the better team on the day.

Mandurah arrived with only 12 players, so Rocky matched that for the game, meaning many players had to sit on the bench and await their turn to play.

There were many passages of play that heartened coach Troy Strong, but also many points that need to be improved on.

This is the first year Mandurah have entered the Colts competition, and their players were a credit to their club, playing the full match with vigour.

There is work to be done for both sides, but all in all, it was a good hit out, and many players now recognise that they are a bit off the pace for this time of the season and have more to do.

Good luck to both teams for 2007.

Unfortunately, Palmyra were a no show for the senior teams to play, but on the 31st March, Kalamunda will bring down all grades to Rockingham, and being the strong and proud club that Kalamunda is, it is sure to be a great day of rugby.
These will be the last games before the competition commences on the 14th April, after the Easter break.

2: Successful Funday at Club

Saturday, March 10, 2007

A successful RugbyWA Funday was held at the club on Saturday with the attendance of Nathan Sharpe to sign posters and chat with the many young players who attended.

A BBQ was available and also a skill game where players passed a ball through a large board a life size picture of Nathan on it.

Other Western Force players were to attend the day, but Angus Scott was having X-rays, Drew Mitchell physio, and Pat O'Connor had his house broken in to, so it was left to a very accommodating Nathan Sharpe to attend.

After the Western Force's first home win against the Hurricanes on Friday night, we were probably lucky to see anyone arrive.

Thanks to Nathan for his support of Rockingham, and our sympathies to the other players.

3: Willem van Dyk to coach Perth Gold

Monday, March 05, 2007

Rockingham coach Villi van Dyk has been appointed Perth Gold coach for the 2007 season.

The Perth Gold team will not be included in the Australian Rugby Shield competition this year, but will instead tour Japan in July.

The team will be selected from Challenge Cup teams, with re-inforcement from Western Force players not selected for Super 14 duties.
The team will be limited to six professional players.

Congratulations go to Willem on his appointment.

4: David Thomas selected for MBF Forward Pack

Up and coming Rockingham junior player David Thomas, has been selected to attend the four day MBF Forward Pack initiative.

5: Rocky credible at 7's

Wednesday, February 28, 2007

Rockingham entered a team in the Toohey's New Sevens held at Perry Lakes last Saturday, with a reasonable result, considering that there had been no 7's practice, and the team was only finalised on Thursday night.

In the first match, Nedlands were the opposition, and they proved to be a hard team to play with the Rocky boys taking a loss, and moving to the Shield section.

Next it was Curtin, and Rockingham accounted for them relatively comfortably, which saw them move to an encounter with Wanneroo.
Wanneroo had been on the end of a mix up in the scoring of their previous game, and felt hard done by, so decided to pack up and go home.
This meant Rockingham just needed to kit up and take the field, to gain the forfeit without even playing.

So the final of the plate was between Rocky and Soaks, with the result going Soaks way in the end.
Rockingham did have their moments, and certainly had the better second half, but by that stage the game had been won.

All in all a good day which gave the players their first hit out for the season, but the only bummer was the amazing "Beetle" receiving an ankle injury in the last game.

6: Brendan O'Dea joins Force Academy

Sunday, February 11, 2007

Rockingham's Brendan O'Dea has been accepted into the Western Force Firepower Academy.
Brendan will join two other Rockingham players, Ryan Tyrell and Kieran Longbottom at the Academy.

Brendan has just returned from trials for the Australian U/19 team at the Institute of Sport in Canberra, and his inclusion in the Academy ensures that he will receive top line coaching, and have the use of top facilities to progress his rugby career.

Last season, Rockingham players Tyrell and Longbottom were included in the Western force tour group to New Zealand, gaining valuable knowledge of rugby at high level.
Woodside Petroleum's involvement in WA Rugby has enabled these players to tour with the Force, and at present, Ryan Tyrell is with the group on the current leg of the Super 14 trip to South Africa.

1: Bondi Tens 2007
The U.W.A. Rugby club made its first trip to the Bondi Tens in Sydney held on Friday the 9th and Saturday the 10th of February. The trip was a huge success on a number of levels. On the playing front the team made the semi-finals of plate competition and for the club it was great to see some of the more senior guys playing alongside and mixing socially with younger members of the club.

2: University of Western Australia Rugby Football Club is proud to announce the appointment of Dwayne Nestor to the position of 1st Grade Head Coach.
Dwayne started his rugby career at St Joseph’s College, Sydney before completing a Sports Journalism degree and playing in Canberra. He then spent two years playing for the Dubbo Kangaroos in country New South Wales.
