I managed to catch about 5 minutes of a game yesterday (or was it the day before? - weekends sort of blur after a while) It's a great initiative!

    Super 20 Rugby World Series

It is real and it exists and it is something that Rugby WA should get invloved in outside of the Super 14 Feb-May season to groom newcomers and grow rugby in Perth and WA.

    Go to Super20 Rugby Challenge

What is this all about ?
    Overview

    · Rugby’s growth and development, especially with broadcasters and sponsors amongst Tier 2 & Tier 3 nations around the world, suffers as a result of limited participation into the Six Nations, Super 14 and Heineken Cup competitions.

    · There is a global demand from Tier 2 & 3 nations, as well as surplus elite players from the top 10 rugby playing nations, to collectively have an annual global rugby competition which makes provision for relegation and promotion in a professional tournament that is below the Six nations, Super 14 and Heineken Cup competitions.

    · The tournament and the participating 20 rugby franchises are underwritten by broadcast and participating sponsors, who seek to associate themselves with the development of rugby participants and a wider television audience of 300 million.

    · Rugby in the United States has over 2,000 rugby clubs, playing over 50,000 matches a year. It is from this base that the tournament will be built, as rugby, in the US, is growing at a rate of over 25% a year.

    · The Youth sector growth rate of 300% a year makes Rugby the fastest growing sport in the US today.

    · Over 70% of rugby players in the US make over $75,000 a year, 98% are college graduates and Rugby is the fastest growing sport on college campuses.

    · The popularity of the game of rugby globally and on the domestic level has brought about a significant growth in the availability of broadcast options, merchandising and licensing, especially in the Americas, but the real driving force is the professionalism of rugby via the establishment of a World Series Rugby tournament with 20 franchise properties

The Super 20 Rugby World Series tournament would work as follows:
    Timing:

2008-2012 from July-November (Not ever in a IRB Rugby World Cup year)
Mechanics: 20 Franchises each receiving $250K pm, or US$3m pa as follows:
    USA 8
    Canada 2
    Argentina 1
    Brazil 1
    Europe 4
    Pacific Rim 2
    South Africa 2

    · In a feeder tournament, a Challengers-in-Waiting Series, there is a registration of 3 Franchises-In-Waiting, 12 months in advance of the previous years S20RWS tournament, to play the 2 last placed Super 20 sides, who would face relegation each year. These 3 Franchises-In-Waiting and the last placed 2 sides play a Super 20 Promotion Tournament in a Home, & Away series in which the top 2 teams of the log, are promoted and qualify for the Super 20 Rugby World Series. This is intended to make the Series as competitive as possible.

    · Each of the 23 Franchises throws its doors open to quasi-professional rugby players, as they can recruit up to 8 foreign players from a squad of 30, to cultivate the best rugby players locally. This free market player system, opens up the trading of registered S20RWS players, plus develops the quality of rugby nationally and internationally and retains the value of the franchise and broadcast airtime for the sponsors and advertisers.

    Super 20 Rugby World Series

It seems that this would be more of a World Series than the baseball and football

Haymaker it sounds good. Im not confident it will happen soon, especially since its 2008 and your season hasnt been sorted. Im all for expanding the game globally but you have to remember your playing with the IRB( old fat boys smoking cigars. and with their collective snouts in the trough)

    Super 20 Rugby World Series

    Hydrangea

IRB focus mainly on National teams.

I hear from Philadelphia that the 18 Rugby Super League Teams have formed 9 Super 20 Franchises to participate in the July-October competition - which is post their RSL team competition - also over here USA Rugby only focusses on the NA4 (North American Four) teams and have neglected the feeder territorial teams entirely.

Still I see them having this up and running in a month or so - just wish the Force would join in like the Goldcoast Rugby chaps.

Does this thing have any backing from USA Rugby or any other governing body at all? If it is going to exist outside of the game's existing national unions, I don't know if players are gonna want to play in it, as it could mean being excluded from national teams, etc. (I doubt we're talking about enormous amounts of money to lure these players away).

The reason I'm wondering about this is that USA Rugby is supposed to be launching their own "Super 6" tournament this year - which was basically an expansion of the existing North America 4 tournament - featuring 3 teams from the US and 3 from Canada. I don't imagine that they would want this Super 20 tournament muscling in on their territory.

Also, this "franchise in waiting" idea sounds like it would be a disaster from a sponsorship point of view.

    I have some major doubts...

    Nominate

I officially nominate myself to be a member of the delegation to the World Super 20 Rubgy conference!!

    Oh I bloody wish!!!!

Idea is great, I would love to hear the outcome of it all. Not sure how many teams will come from the larger rugby nations, but it might entice some of the smaller rugby clubs in these nations!!

Well good luck to them I say, the more people playing rugby the better i say!!

The tournament is way beyond your team theories above.

Over here the USA's top tier competitions teams, of which there are 18, see http://www.premier-rugby.com/template.php will form 9 of the franchise teams.

Don't under estimate the size of rugby here in the US and especially at regional level. It might get lost in the blur of baseball, basketball, football and ice hockey - but with a population of 300 million - there are over 2,000 rugby clubs in the States - translates into a following that is especially passionate amongst the Ivy Leagues, ex Pats etc.

Even the Kiwis have recognised this and want to tap the sponsor market and hace signed a 5 year deal to play here.

If you are the TWF rugby policeman and talk corrupt - if I remember correctly the guy you refer to slaughtered SA Rugby in the High Courts in South Africa and has won every single High Court application in his favour - seems to me he is on the right side of the law - where are you?

News from New York is that CBS Sports has signed up for the Super 20 Rugby World Series and that Melbourne and the Gold Coast are the two Aussie franchises who have teams in the competition.

Where is Rugby WA in all of this and why do they miss the boat?
