    Force Trample Reds

    Rick Boyd
    Sportal

The Western Force scored their second home win in two weeks and gave the Queensland Reds a night they would rather forget with a 38-3 drubbing in their Super 14 match at Subiaco Oval on Saturday night.

Everything the Reds touched went wrong; an endless succession of collapsed scrums, lost lineouts, knock-ons, missed line kicks, turned over ruck ball and inferior field position.

The Force did most of the damage in a controversial first spell and led 18-3 at half time, the same score as the two sides held in their 2006 meeting.

The Reds' woes were compounded with two yellow cards and a subsequent red card for wing Peter Hynes, and a penalty try in the first 10 minutes. Halfback Chris O'Young scored the second try for the Force and wing Cameron Shepherd kicked two penalties and a conversion, with a sole penalty to Reds fullback Andrew Walker in reply. The Force dominated territory, stole three Reds lineouts and almost scored a third try along the way.

The second half, fortunately for the Force, bore no resemblance to the 2006 match. The Reds gained more territory but with no better result, while the Force finished with a late flourish, scoring tries to Shepherd and wing Digby Ioane to ram the win home and collect a bonus point.

The Force opened with multiple phases of attack and in just the third minute of play gained a penalty in front when Queensland came offside defending their 22. Shepherd converted the sitter.

The niggle started early as well, with a flurry of pushing and shoving following an aborted scrum minutes later.

The Force gained the penalty and kicked to five metres out from the Reds' line. The home side rucked ahead and ran the blind, where Hynes slapped the ball down, preventing wing Digby Ioane from scoring in the corner unmarked, eight minutes into the game. Referee Brett Bowden ruled a controversial penalty try and Shepherd converted his second sitter as the Force went ahead 10-0. Hynes copped a yellow card to add to Queensland's pain.

The Force returned to attack mode with waves of phases in the Reds' 22 and 15 minutes in, centre Ryan Cross went over in the corner but dropped the ball in the act of scoring.

The Reds gained virtually their first foray into the Force's half after 20 minutes play, but the Force defended stoutly until flanker David Pocock was penalised for diving over a ruck in front of the posts and Walker slotted the penalty goal after 24 minutes.

The Force returned to attack and after some slight of hand of a narrow blind side, No.8 Scott Fava charged up and O'Young finished off with a darting try. In the process fullback Drew Mitchell was spear tackled by Hynes and following the touch judge's report, the wing received a red card for this second offence. Shepherd missed the conversion but the Force were 15-3 ahead and dominating territory.

The Reds rejected a kickable penalty with four minutes to play in the half after a muddled period of play, and gained attacking position with a penalty lineout but the Force stole the poor throw in and raced downfield. Instead, Shepherd landed a difficult 40-metre penalty on an angle, for offside, and the Force took an 18-3 lead into half time.

Shepherd missed a long range penalty attempt seven minutes into the half and Walker responded with a longer one, also unsuccessful after 10 minutes, as the Reds gained more territory but with no more result.

A good scoring opportunity three minutes later was lost through a Reds knocked-on, and the Force gained a relieving penalty, won a kicking duel and went back on attack.

Shepherd added another penalty goal 18 minutes into the half, and the Force followed up with waves of attack and should have scored with an overlap, but the Reds spoiled and conceded the penalty. Shepherd obliged from in front and the Force went ahead 24-3.

Queensland didn't give up, and reserve halfback Nic Berry beat four tacklers to go over the line but knocked the ball on as the Reds battled hard with nothing going their way approaching the final ten minutes.

A mixed second half seemed set to finish with a whimper but Shepherd again brought the Subi Oval crowd to its feet with five minutes to play, beating two tacklers to cross the line out wide after a rare first phase width of the field sweep from a lineout. Shepherd came around to touch down closer to the posts and converted his try for a stirring 31-3 lead.

Wing Digby Ioane gathered a brilliant cross field kick in the corner but was taken out in the air with two minutes to play. His revenge came two minutes later on full time as he followed up a charge by blindside flanker Richard Brown and raced in a runaway try in the same corner. Shepherd converted for the stunning 38-3 win.

    Western Force 38
Tries: O'Young, Shepherd, Ioane, Penalty try
    Conversions: Shepherd 3
    Penalties: Shepherd 4

    Reds 3
    Penalties: Walker

Please explain......how come there were so few "real" scrums??

Although I played as a second rower, I was too busy with head down/bum up to know the ins and outs of a scrum proper.

It appeared that 9 out of 10 scrums tonight ended in ap[enalty.

    Why is it so???

    New rules up to shit???

Essentially lack of experience in the reds pack. Experienced props can engage without "swinging" from the opposite pack (i.e. using the opposite pack to hold them up from collapsing). The swinging is generally observed by the infringing prop's elbow pointing at the ground rather than at 90 degrees to it.

Tonight''s game introduced some very inexperienced props to the world of S14 - as Brendon Cannon was happy to remind the ref in the first half!

Unfortunatley the reason that the scrums were so bad was that the reds are out of props...purely and simply they are running queensland club players out onto the paddock and that will continue to the end of the season...

It's a pity that I was just looking at the rugby.com.au websites live scores.

Doesnt show a hell of a lot and I wont be getting to see a lot of the games until such times as I get my broadband working...

It's good to win, but it would be much better to watch the win

And it would have been awesome to be there watching the boys win for the second time. I think that even if the reds had been at full strength, we would have beaten them... but the score would have been a lot closer I think.

the live scores on the rugbywa web site might be a bit more exciting Dramoth......

    they were taught by Burgs...

FULL TIME: Emirates Western Force 38 Reds 3. A terrific performance from the home side, particularly the exciting finishing in the last five minutes. Four tries to the Force scored by Shepherd, Ioane, O'Young and a penalty try, while Shep kicked 7 from 9 to finish with a personal haul of 23 points. A week off now (the Force have the bye in round 8) will allow players such as Giteau, Henjak, Staniforth and Pusey the chance to overcome injury - although some will ask if they will be able to force their way back into the side. Dave Pocock has been named Man of the Match; too right too. Force caused 24 turnovers while conceding only nine - a super reflection of the work done by the back rowers.

80 mins and it's another cracker of a try to the Emirates Western Force! It's Digby Ioane who scores this one under the posts to secure the four try bonus point. Super play from Shep and Richard Brown in the lead up there. Shep converts, final score is 38-3

75 mins and what a try!! A beautiful backline move from the top of the lineout sees Drew Mitchell put Shep into space, who pushes defenders off as he tip-toes down the sideline for 20m and scores a peach of a try! Shep converts his own kick to make it 31-3 in 76th min.

Horwill off, Cam Trelor on for Reds.

71 mins and Vedelago is replaced by Luke Doherty - who promptly knocks on - while Lloyd Johansson is replaced by Charlie Fetoai.

Quade Cooper lights up the nigt with some wonderful footwork, only for Digby Ioane to come across in cover and force the knock on a metre out.

65 mins and Tai replaces Canno. Crowd is 26,023 tonight.

A few changes by the Reds - Brando Va'alu and Herman Hunt off, Henari Veratau and Ernest Skelton on

63rd min and wave after wave of blue attack ends with the Reds giving away a series of offside penalties. Shep converts from in front, makes it 24-3.

61 mins and Matt Hodgson comes on for Pocock, who has had a terrific time out there.

Late tackle by James Horwill gives the Force another crack at the posts. All good from Shep, takes the score to 21-3 57 mins in. One wonders if Horwill deserved a yellow card for that, but with Mr Bowden already giving two to Hynes, maybe he was a bit reluctant.

Angus Scott on for AJ Whalley after 53 mins. Kearnsy saying on the TV that AJ has eaten a LOT of pies since his transition from flanker to prop.

52 mins and Canno returns from the blood bin for Taipan.

50 mins and Andrew Walker is going to have a shot from the half way, but his ol' legs can't find the radar on that one.

45 mins and Shep is lining up the sticks after Mr Bowden marches the Reds an extra 10m for back chat. Shep pulls this one wide left though.

43 mins and Cannon comes off with blood. Tai McIsaac is out there now.

Back out there now, no changes at the break

HALF TIME: Emirates Western Force 18 Reds 3. A dominant first half from the home side, who looked in control at most stages. O'Young, Pocock, Brown and Mitchell have been heavily involved, while Fava and Shepherd have added their class in areas too.

Breakaway from Mitchell, who puts it on the toe. Now a penalty is awarded for reds players being offside. Shep will line up from 30m out and 8m in from touch... no problem! 18-3 now, 39 mins in.

Touch Judge comes in after the try to speak to Mr Bowden about Hynes' tackle on Drew Mitchell. Bowden decides it's worthy of a second yellow for Hynes, which means a red card and the Queensland side are down to 14 men for the rest of the game.

26th minute and a try to Chris O'Young for the Emirates Western Force! Great one-two between Scott Fava and Shepherd ends with Fava popping it up to Chriso who strolls over untouched from 15m out. Shep can't convert, but it's 15-3 now.

Penalty to the Reds 15m out directly in front. Andrew Walker to do the kicking tonight, and has no problem with that dolly. 10-3 in the 24th minute.

Force pinged for closing the gap for a second time tonight. Must be Mr Bowden's rule of the night tonight.

Reds on the attack here - Mitchell pushes Hynes into touch just a few metres out though.

18th min and Hynes returns from the sin bin. Nick Berry replaces Will Genia.

Another 5m defensive scrum for the Reds, with Stephen Moore replacing Sean Hardman after just 15 minutes. Hardman has a hand injury we're told.

More super play from the home side... sweeping movements from one side of the field to the other. Ryan Cross makes a dive for the line, but drops it forward in the action of scoring.

So close! Rudi Vedelago takes a great offload from Dave Pocock, but the ball is stripped free centimetres short of the line... 5m scrum to the Reds.

Pelesasa would definitely have scored if hynes had not knocked that ball down there. Fair call from Mr Bowden.

A penalty try! All action as Peter Hynes is sin binned for an intentional knock down 2 metres out from the line. Shep converts to make it 10-0 after 8 mins

Great touch finder from Drew Mitchell after a scrum penalty gives the Force great field position...

No problems for the Force winger, and it's 3-0 early on.

Third min and so far it's all been the home side. A penalty awarded against the reds now for slowing down the ruck, and Cam Shepherd will line up from 15m out directly in front.

Teams have run out onto Subi. Our referee is Mr Bowden, an Aussie for this Australian derby.

No late changes to either side. Reds as per program, Emirates Western Force as per the changes listed below. Chiefs have won the early game 34-7 over the Lions.

About 30 mins to kick off here. The home side are out there on the Subi turf warming up on a warm evening here in Perth.

Full Time in the John Welborn Cup curtain raiser; Kolbe Catholic College have beaten Forrestfield SHS 48-5.

90 minutes until kick off here. Just a reminder that Henjak and Giteau are out of the side named on Wednesday by coach John Mitchell. Henjak (arm) and Giteau (leg) didn't make it through their fitness tests at the Captain's Run yesterday, and have been replaced by Chris O'Young and Jimmy Hilgendorf respectively. Lachlan MacKay and Jon McGrath have come onto the bench for the first time in 2007.

Emirates Western Force vs Reds. Kickoff 7.05pm WA time, Friday 16 March.

    Thanks for that.

Yet it appeared that the Force got penalised so often for collapsing the scrum, rotating the scrum, it was beyond a joke.

From a distance, I thought that perhaps the ref was tossing a coin as to who was going to get the penaltyy.

I'm probably wrong, but I couldn't see any rhyme nor reason in the whole process.

Those scrums were shocking, Kearnsey didn't want to look at them half way thru second half! Eddie Jone's downcast expressions of sob sob sos after the match were a frightening admission to us Qld fans that we are in deep doo-doo.

sob was really a 'son of a bitch' mention of the ref, done very very quietly, and done twice

Well done to all the Force team, a super showing.

Now where can the Reds find some more props?????

Plucking players from club grade doesn't work all too often, although wasn't Phil Kearns plucked from second grade at Southern Districts in Sutherland shire by Allan Jones and went on to perform brilliantly and help win a world cup...Proves that given the opportunity some players can rise to the occasion, i just hope eddie has as good an eye for talent as Jonesy did back then...Judging from the performance of the props last week he still has a bit of searching ahead of him, or at least he can't wait for Rodzilla to come back...

Listening to the commentary on Fox I honestly thought that Kearnsy and Marto were about to go down on the pitch and help the Reds
