Former Sydney first grade coach Geoff Townsend has joined RugbyWA as the new Firepower Academy Head Coach.

Townsend comes to Perth with more than 20 years of experience across all levels of rugby in Australia, Japan and the USA.

He was first grade coach for Sydney club South Districts from late 2004 to 2006 and coached Manly first grade in 2000.

Townsend also spent three years in Japan, at Kobe Steel and Teikyo University clubs, and was NSW U/19s coach from 1997-99.

RugbyWA High Performance Manager Wayne Goldsmith said Townsend would play an important part in making WA a province of choice for aspiring rugby players.

“For the Emirates Western Force to be successful in the years to come we need to ensure we have the leading player and coach development program in Australian Rugby,” Goldsmith said.

“Geoff’s experience, skills and knowledge of the game at all levels will be a key factor in us achieving the goal.”

Townsend said he was excited about his new role and was looking forward to working with the Emirates Western Force coaching group in developing not just the Academy program but also the local club competition.

“A critical area I want to focus on is club and representative rugby in WA and creating strong working relationships with local clubs, coaches and players. What’s the saying? A rising tide lifts all the boats,” Townsend said.

“I am also keen to get to the stage where our Academy graduates become regular members of the professional rugby program and wear the Emirates Western Force jersey.”

The 43 year old replaces Steve McFarland, who left the organisation in December to return to teaching, and will arrive in Perth tomorrow
