Suaalii’s Lions preparation under a cloud after scan reveals broken jaw

Joseph-Aukuso Suaalii’s Super Rugby season is over and his preparations for the British and Irish Lions series are under a cloud after scans revealed he has fractured his jaw.

Suaalii suffered what is believed to be the fourth concussion of his career in the NSW Waratahs’ 28-21 defeat to the Queensland Reds on Friday night.

While the Waratahs say he is recovering well from it, he has since developed soreness and further inspection revealed a small displaced fracture in his jaw.

The 21-year-old will now undergo surgery which will rule him out of action for the next four weeks, meaning he will play no further part in the Waratahs’ Super Rugby campaign - and there is no guarantee he will be ready to play after that, with a review to be conducted after that period of time to determine when he can return to the field.

It is an unwelcome development as the visit of the British and Irish Lions looms; they face the Waratahs in Sydney on July 5 and then play the first of three Tests against the Wallabies on July 19 in Brisbane.

“This is unfortunate for us and especially for Joseph. We wish him all the best in his recovery and return to full health,” said Waratahs coach Dan McKellar.

“We will do all we can to facilitate his recovery in consultation with Rugby Australia to have him in the best shape possible for his availability for the Wallabies.”
