    New RugbyWA home in Malaga?

Did this come out of the Blue? Too far away from the Western Suburbs to be palatable to most I would suggest? Do they even know where Malaga is down at Cott?

RugbyWA welcomes the news that a re-elected WA Labor Government will invest a further $20 million in developing the plans for a new sporting precinct in Malaga. Situated near Whiteman Park between the new Ballajura train station and the Perth Film Studios currently being constructed on Marshall Road, the new precinct will become a critical sporting precinct for Western Australia.
RugbyWA has been working closely with the State Government and the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries to ensure that a new Home of Rugby for Western Australia forms a central and critical part of this precinct and is excited by the opportunities that this will bring to the sport as we work through the Golden Decade. With The British and Irish Lions tour, the 2027 Men’s World Cup, 2029 Women’s World Cup, HSBC SVNS tournament, and Super Rugby Pacific competition showcasing our sport in the coming years, Rugby WA is committed to growing community rugby to 50,000 participants. A new Home of Rugby for Western Australia is a critical part of this and we look forward to continuing to work with Government to achieve this.

Certainly a long way from the Western Suburbs.

One question though is whether any land is actually being given to RugbyWA. That can make a difference.

For instance, the land near where RugbyWA HQ is now located -- including McGillivray/UWA Sports Park -- was gifted to the university by the state government 120 years ago.

I doubt they'd get a whole sports park, but if RugbyWA do get some land, it could be useful for them.

It would be nice to have a facility like the old Perry Lakes, with a small grandstand and of course, a miniature hill

Property developers that donate to both sides of Government be licking their lips at the land RugbyWA is situated on at the moment.

Many, many years ago The Perth Irish Club was offered Lathlain Park as their HQ and they knocked it back opting for the building on Townsend Road with no fields in Subiaco which now up for sale as the club has pretty much imploded over the past years since the closure of Subi Oval, not to mention many of their patrons moving further afield.

Only a clairvoyant real estate guru could have foreseen that outcome. I guess Lathlain would be pretty happy with the tenant that did make the move after Subi's demise.

I believe the intent is that Rugby WA & other sports will become tenants of a DLGSC/VenuesWest-owned multi-sport facility.

A few years ago DLGSC were reaching out to many small &mid-tier State Sporting Associations around WA to establish a sports hub close to Whiteman Park, in some cases with the indication that this was the only way that those sports would be able to secure additional/new govt facility funding.

Essentially, move to our proposed new site Whiteman Park if you want a new facility as we won't be approving any funding for renovation/expansion at your current facility for the forseeable future.

These "conversations" with SSAs started doing the rounds shortly after we came out of COVID, so while it may only just be being made public, the backround politicking has been in progress for a few years.

So they needed the Ellenbrook Line and the new Ballajura Station to be in operation before they announced it? This government is more joined-up than I thought!

The wildcats have just announced that they are also moving their home to Warwick stadium. A bit surprising as I thought their setup at Bendat was pretty good as well. Likewise the Western Force facilities next door and proximity to McGillivray etc. Maybe there is something bigger at play here with all the land being sold off and developed?

Probably also a local MP in need of some votes, nothing like an election to get the barrels of pork rolling

Doubt given it's in a safe Labor seat since it's inception held by the Wicked witch of Transport. (Malaga that is)

True. Given that the ALP also won Churchlands & Neddies in the last wipeout & would probably like to hold them, the theory of flipping the bird to the western suburbs doesn't really wash Either.
