I'm of two minds on that. On one hand, I've no reason to think that the club management isn't doing exactly the right things to maximize member satisfaction. On the other hand, my own preference, now that I got a scarf last year and will get a mug this year, would be to return to the automatic packages of whatever promotional products they decide to include. Except that I know I want a physical membership card, which I imagine most of you that can actually attend matches don't particularly care about having, so I'd assume they wouldn't send those anymore.
Curious to know what you all would like to see.
Great game, Fucken battled right through to the 80!
The negative (from a club POV) to distributing the traditional member pack to all members is that it can lead to an overstock of items if membership take-up is lower than planned. They also have to either (a) factor in postage to all members, even if members don't want the packs, or (b) be left with a large number of uncollected packs (both landfill, and unnecessary cost) if members don't collect them.
I think you'd be surprised how many (or, in reality, how few) members actually collect the packs when there is a degree of effort required on their part to do so! Furthermore, many of the items are thrown away, or at least not retained for very long, and so create unnecessary wastage that way too.
The "member credit" option being adopted by quite a few sports at present, is actually quite clever:
1 - Members get to pick the items they want. This gives them more of an attachment to the items they have chosen
2- Wider range = potentially lower wastage. The supplier then knows exactly how many items to produce or, if pre-ordered, can rotate in/out a few different items without needing the full number of each product from the start.
3 - More items that are generic, and not season specific. This allows for items to be reused for other promos/marketing. Often only the low value items (pins, stickers) are year-specific.
4 - Un-executed redemptions. Some members simply won't use their credit. This is money in the back for the club as they haven't had to produce items that aren't redeemed. A surprising number of AFL members don't redeem the store credit that comes with their membership each year. They still buy from the club shop but forget to use their credit or lose the email code.
For the sports team I work for, we have recently introduced member credit (administered through a local sports retailer, not the MBER+ portal) and our member credit utilization is sitting at around 30%! That said, when we offered physical member packs (available for collection at ANY home game), the collection rate was generally around the same percentage, but we had to buy enough items each year for the whole membership, on the off-chance that everyone chose to collect them, as the items came from China and we didn't have enough time to place top-up orders if required.
Some die-hard fans will always live for the member packs & they can be the most vocal if the packs aren't up to scratch, but generally a lot of members simply don't care too much about the contents. They buy the memberships to support the team, have guaranteed (often discounted) entry to watch the regular games, or for other add-on perks such as exclusive content/news & priority access to hard-to-get tickets.
If my member credit was enough for nothing more than a physical card and a cap I'd be a happy little vegemite.
I couldn't care less if it was done the way they do it now or the old pack of goodies that arrived with membership. In reality those packs contained a bunch of stuff I never really used (hats and pins being the only things I really used, pins are probably a bit optional for me)

Something I’ve noticed this year is the membership card, which I downloaded to my wallet, doesn’t even have the seat numbers on it!
How is anyone going to check?
May the FORCE be with you!
Hello, am I correct in saying you can’t use the members credit to buy any hats, shirts, shorts etc?? We have 7 members so therefore we have to find a way to spend $280 on bottle openers, dog collars, travel mugs etc????
I just ended up getting the standard packs lanyard, pin and card for all four of us.
Generally speaking you aren’t learning much if your lips are moving!!!
