    2024 Super Rugby U16s and U19s

From a Western Force point of view a bit of mixed day out for the two teams in round 1.

    Under 16's 19-18 win:

The forwards had a good outing led by prop and skipper Dozion Laupama, and the three loose forwards RJ Van Der Merwe, Joel Ockenden, and Rhymen Tusi. Chase Bunce will also be one to keep an eye on over the next few weeks. Overall while a bit scrappy they scapped well enough to get over the line in a match that could have gone either way.

    Under 19's 53 - 23 loss:

Started well enough but got overwhelmed by a very good and cohesive Brumbies outfit. Hooker Ollie Barrett had a decent outing together with Finn Prass, Peni Naqau and Boston Fakafanua, however I was most impressed with Oakley Pearce and it will be good to see how he develops.

Mixed results for the boys yesterday, both are now 1 and 1.

Under 16's went down to Melbourne Rebels 24 - 27:

Boys played well but could not turn early pressure into points, and made a few more handling errors than the previous week. The loss of Chase Bunce just before half time, and Rhymen Tusi missing a portion of the second half, gave the Rebels a bit of momentum with their bigger and faster players, but a good fightback in the final quarter saw us get close and almost home.

Again liked what I saw and Dozion Laupama, Apakuki Te Hiko, Joel Ockenden, RJ Van Der Merwe, Rhymen Tusi, Fatani Fatanitavake, Chase Bunce are starting to show great development. Looking forward to seeing them "live" on Sunday 23/10/2024 v Reds.

    Under 19's good win 47 - 22

Good outing and boys played very well, looks like they are starting to come together. Like last week started well and at least this week they seemed to keep it up and the result speaks for itself.

Liked what I saw from Ollie Barrett, Tafito Ahki, Boston Fakafanua, Oakley Pearce and Finn Prass.

It was good to finally watch the boys "live".

A very decent crowd despite the weather.

The more games we seem to play at Claremont the more the stadium grows on me for these types of matches, I think the Force have found a good option.

The U16's had the best of the weather, but unfortuantely the U19's copped the brunt of the storm front and the second quarter was victim to an almighty down pour.

I think the over riding purpose of these games is for us to measure ourselves against the other states that have far more entrenched and structured rugby sytems in place.

Both our teams showed fight and tenancity, however both were just unable to turn pressure and pocesssion into points, and again seemed to be beaten by teams that were far too speedy, a lot more cohesive and with a bit more rugby IQ. While we have some way to go still, the gap year on year appears to be closing.

Another noticeable postive is the number of recognisable "rugby" faces amongst the coaches and the spectators and this will help build that missing Rugby IQ that we have missed out in years gone by, when Perth was more a transitional short term residence for rugby players.

From a personal point of view I really like what I am seeing and while teams consist of all members in unison to make it functional and sucessful I would like to just give a few honourable mentions:

The U16 lose trio: Joel Ockenden, RJ Van Der Merwe, and especially Rhymen Marsters were outstanding.

In the U18's: Boston Fakafanua and Oakley Pearce are a great centre pairing, If I am correct Peni Naqau only just came up from the U16's last year and his development is going to be good to watch. Tafito Ahki is a very busy scrumhalf. Jackson Bridges looks very light but he certainly punches way above his weight division.

I look foward to Sundays game against the Tahs.

Not unexpected, but the U16 and U19 Teams of the week only featured one Force player in each:

    U 16 : Bareek Kleine-Deters Ausage (Southern Lions),

    U 19: Boston Fakafanua (c) (Fortescue Academy).

Big task ahead against NSW this weekend.

Looking forward to watching the boys in probably their last hit out for this years Super Rugby U16 and U19 for 2024.

For those attending please note the very early kick off times on Sunday morning.

Interesting that RA have decided that WA stands equal with NSW and Q'ld in their potential to produce the next generation of players. Seems like it should be time to push for a restructure on how development money is distributed to the communities....

    My personal opinion only:

The U 16 and U 19 Western Force season has now wrapped up.

A big thank you to Nicola and Andrew Forrest, the sponsors, support staff, families and friends and of course the players that made it happen.

Credit to the boys who gave it everything and showed lots of ticker against the odds.

As expected and in line with many other countries around the world, the teams that originate from rugby heartlands showed that the gulf at these levels is and will always be vast due to systems, structures, and most importantly the higher level of competiveness that comes with "proper" rugby schools. Added to that in our case is where the main sports available to younger players is not as complimentary as League is to Union in the heartland states, resulting in our player pool being vastly restricted in comparison.

    That said lots of postives:
    * Year on year I have seen significant progress, while some may say the results do not bear this out, remember the other states are not standing still they are also evolving forward.
    * The crowds. It is very encouraging to see the support given to these boys.
    * Most important is seeing the rugby IQ assisting these boys. To name just a few as examples. Jeremey Thrush, Jono Lance coaching, Simon Cron running the water. Nic White on a pass from Wallaby camp last week in the crowd together with a few other ex players.
    * Most of the players did very well and gave it everything they had. It takes all players to make a team and while there is no I in team, I just want to list a few players who caught my eye (personal opinion only) and will hopefully go onto bigger and better rugby things. There is a lot more than these few names that did well but I wanted to keep the list fairly short:
    - U16: Dozion Laupama, Bareek Kleine-Deters Ausage, RJ VD Merwe, Chase Bunce, Fatani Fatanitavake, Joel Ockenden, and Rhymen Tusi
    - U19: Ollie Barrett, Jackson Bridges, Tafito Ahki, Boston Fakafanua, Oakley Pearce, Finn Prass, and Peni Naqau

Again only two players, one from each team, made this weeks teams of the week.

U16 Chase Bunce, and a nice surprise to see Daniel Christodoulou rewarded for his efforts in the U19 team.
