Wallabies coach Eddie Jones commits to coaching Australia despite speculation about his future
Eddie Jones has committed to coaching the Wallabies, despite speculation about his future after Australia's disappointing performance at the Rugby World Cup in France. Speculation has been rife that Jones is in the mix for a coaching job in Japan, which Jones has strenuously denied. Jones said he believed he had made the right decision to take a young side to France, despite the Wallabies' failure to advance to the quarterfinals for the first time in tournament history.
Jones was appointed to the role in January, just eight months before the Rugby World Cup. His team has won just two of nine matches under his leadership. Despite the speculation about his future, Jones said he believed he had the support of Rugby Australia.
"I believe so but we need to do a review and the results were disappointing and everybody is gutted by it," Jones said. "Especially myself, but I stand by the decisions we have made and I think we have left Australian rugby in a better position."
Asked to explain Australia’s poor performance in France, Jones replied: "We were just not good enough. You just have to watch the quarterfinals at the weekend. We are not at that level and we cannot pretend to be at the level. Can we be there by 2027? Yes, we can." The coach said he understood fans' frustration with the team's performance.
"Yeah, look — we feel their hurt. We feel all the supporters' hurt. And we really appreciate the great support we had in France and back in Australia for the team. But ... sometimes the change you have to have is uncomfortable, and it is quite difficult. And sometimes you have to go through this to get into a better state. And I believe the problems we've had — particularly at the national team — will put us in a better state going forward."
