We understand what this game means,’ Western Force coach Tim Sampson on must-win clash with Highlanders

Western Force have their Super Rugby Pacific finals destiny in their own hands with four must-win games, starting against an equally desperate Highlanders in Dunedin on Friday.

They know that only victory can realistically keep their hopes alive and will draw on last season for strength when, against the odds, they won the last three games to make their first finals appearance.

Three teams are chasing one finals spot, the Force, Highlanders and Rebels.......

Hope Macdonald gets more than 2 minutes this time!

Highlanders are playing Gilbert at 10 surprisingly.

    Reserves:

    18. Saula Maugham
    19. Fabian Holland
    20. Hugh Renton
    21. Folau Fakatava
    22. Mitch Hunt
    23. Liam Coombes-Fabling

Teams look relatively evenly matched. I might like the look of our forward pack better, as long as we hold up at scrum time. We should have a big edge at lineout time, with 4 genuine jumpers including 3 that are very good at stealing also (Thrush, Rodda & Anstee).

And welcome back to Force old boy Ainsley. Could do with the likes of him back next year, seeing as we're losing Medrano and Holmes. He's still only 26 and has Wallaby caps, so he's not an All Black candidate.

Force lose star scrumhalf for crunch clash
    Thu, 12/05/2022, 7:35 am
    Justin Chadwick - AAP

Western Force coach Tim Sampson is optimistic scrumhalf Issak Fines-Leleiwasa can overcome a foot injury in time to play again this Super Rugby Pacific season.

Fines-Leleiwasa suffered the injury in last week's 53-15 loss to the Crusaders and has been ruled out of Friday night's season-defining clash with the Highlanders in Dunedin.

The Force have already lost flanker Kane Koteka to a season-ending foot injury, but Sampson is hopeful Fines-Leleiwasa hasn't suffered the same fate.

"He was in a moon boot when we flew out yesterday," Sampson said.

"I haven't got the final report. The early signs are that it's not as bad as Kane's. Hopefully it's just a couple of weeks.

"The injury is unfortunate because he was certainly lighting the game up for us."

Even if Fines-Leleiwasa is only ruled out for two weeks, he would still miss matches against the Highlanders, Chiefs and Moana Pasifika.

Veteran Ian Prior has been thrust back into the starting line-up against the Highlanders to fill the void left by Fines-Leleiwasa, while the Force are also bolstered by the return of star winger Manasa Mataele (concussion protocols).

Captain Feleti Kaitu'u is still battling tightness in his legs and will come off the bench again.

Five losses on the trot have seen the Force plummet to 10th with a 2-8 record. But with eight of the 12 teams qualifying for finals, the Force are still right in the thick of the play-off dog fight.

The Force are three points adrift of the eighth-placed Highlanders, making Friday night's clash a must-win affair for the Perth-based franchise.

Sampson's men produced the goods when it mattered most to qualify for the Super Rugby AU finals last year, and the outgoing coach is backing them to repeat the effort.

"This group has proven that when their backs are against the wall and there's desperation required we can certainly adapt to that and play some of our best footy," he said.

"The guys are well aware that the Highlanders are a team that we are battling out for that final eighth position. It's a very important game for us."

The Highlanders have named winger Sam Gilbert at flyhalf and Thomas Umaga-Jensen at 12 in a powerful combination.

Anyone else think its strange that they schedule a Force home game vs New Zealand team at 8pm Perth time which is 12am in New Zealand then schedule a Force away game in New Zealand on Friday night which is 3:05pm in Perth. Its like there actively trying to get less tv viewers.

Force wary after Highlanders' shock call
    Justin Chadwick

Western Force coach Tim Sampson is confident his "rock-solid" 10-12 pairing will be able to cope with the Highlanders' selection curve ball in Friday night's crunch clash in Dunedin.

The Highlanders produced a surprise at the selection table by naming winger Sam Gilbert at flyhalf for the Super Rugby Pacific fixture.

Gilbert, who hasn't played properly at five-eighth since his schoolboy days, was named in the No.10 jersey despite the availability of regular five eighth Mitch Hunt plus Marty Banks and Vilimoni Koroi.

The 189cm, 98kg Gilbert will give the Highlanders extra muscle at playmaker, and he could potentially expose the Force if the visitors aren't switched on defensively.

The Highlanders have also moved the powerful Thomas Umaga-Jensen from outside centre to inside centre, giving the Highlanders a 10-12 combo that packs a punch.

The Force have again named 20-year-old rising star Reesjan Pasitoa at No.10 and 23-year-old Bayley Kuenzle at 12.

Sampson is confident they can handle the heat from the Highlanders.

"He (Gilbert) is a big body. They've also shifted their 13 into 12, who is also a big body," Sampson said.

"What you can read into that is they might look to play nice and direct and take us through the middle of the field.

"But Pasitoa and Kuenzle are very strong defensively and they've proven that this year. They're rock solid.

"They're a good combination and they don't mind the physical stuff themselves."

Friday night's match looms as somewhat of a must-win encounter for the 10th-placed Force as they attempt to snare a top-eight berth.

The Force are three points behind the eighth-placed Highlanders, meaning a loss on Friday night could leave them as much as eight points adrift of eighth spot with three games to go.

Sampson has recalled star winger Manasa Mataele, but scrumhalf Issak Fines-Leleiwasa has been left in Perth due to a foot injury.

The Highlanders enter the match full of confidence following their 27-19 win over the Queensland Reds last week.

Same time is fine but it should have been played on a Saturday or preferably a Sunday to be day / time zone friendly to most
