Emirates Western Force Outplay The Queensland Reds

The Emirates Western Force have outplayed the Queensland Reds in their Australian Provincial Championship clash at Ballymore in Brisbane.

The visitors scored four tries to nil in a comprehensive 32-6 victory before a crowd of 3,025.

Wallaby hooker Brendan Cannon made a memorable return to representative rugby, scoring a try in his first game since surgery on a serious neck injury in April.






Also amongst the points was Australian U19 winger Brett Stapleton, who scored twice, and one of the exciting discoveries of the Tooheys New Super 14 season, Haig Sare.

Stapleton opened the scoring for the Emirates Western Force, both tries coming within 12 minutes after good ball movement led to the blonde-haired flyer crossing in the corner on both occasions.

Emirates Western Force APC coach John Mulvihill said the team had trained with enthusiasm and energy all week, and they brought that spark onto the paddock.

He said the team stuck to structure, were solid in defence and counter-rucked with intent.

"Our execution in attack was first class, particularly in the opening 20 minutes," Mulvihill said. "Matty Henjak and Scotty Daruda really controlled the game and outplayed their opposite numbers."

The Emirates Western Force's next game is in Canberra on Friday against the Brumbies, who beat the Waratahs 14-13 in Canberra yesterday.

Some poor guy that evidently doesnt know me and doesnt care about the football got all Gerry's updates so sorry about that one.

What that article doesnt mention is that Canon was treated to an early shower when he was sent to the sin bin about 5 minutes before time.

Oh I managed to give the whole 3 other groups of force fans cards they included: The Pocock clan, he looks just like his dad even their arms are the same! I think we worked it out to be Pat O'connors mum and dad (who ever number 4 was today) and Junior's girlfriends family...

Luke Doherty needs to wash his mouth out as well, their was several audible f and c words coming out of his mouth towards the end of the 2nd half. I am not at my house till tomorrow so I will load some photos onto my photobucket then but definatly not all of them.

And your slant on the game AS? Did we look dominant and clearly as good as the score suggests? Or did Qld just play carp? (didnt want to say CRAP... )

Personally specially from the kick off the force appeared dominant which was evident when Stapleton crossed easily twice within 12 minutes and came close to going over again within the 15.
Although the reds did start to fight back towards the end of the first half they dropped off again after half-time. (Tarsh claims that this is because Chappo went off). Even with a few niggling injuries and cramping the force remained domminant even when down to 14 men.


The kids behind me think Chicken came close to scoring at the end but he was nowhere near the ball at the time.

Jon McGrath did well in his cameo performance, perhaps even better then Henjak when it came to feeding the scrum only needing one attempt.

I still swear I was the only force fan not related to a player somehow in the 3000 people.

Reds suffer APC setback

The QR Queensland Reds suffered an early setback to their ACP campaign with a 32-6 loss to the Western Force at Ballymore on Saturday afternoon in front of a crowd of 3025.



The Reds were out-enthused by the visitors who had plenty to prove scoring four tries to nil, a including a double to Australian U-19 speedster Brett Stapleton in the first seven minutes.



Brendan Cannon scored a try in his come-back match from a serious-neck injury, while fullback Haig Sare scored the other Force try.



Scott Daruda kicked two penalties and three conversions to complete the scoring for the Force.



For the Reds, Andrew Brown kicked two penalties



Despite the score-line Eddie Jones was not pessimistic about his team's future chances.



"Whilst I'm disappointed, it's not the end-of-the-world stuff yet," he said.



"We're trying a few different things, it just didn't work today."



The Reds had their fair share of field position and possession but were let down by poor handling.



"We created enough opportunities to at least put pressure on them but the execution of those final passes was pretty dreadful," said Jones.



Jones wouldn't concede that his team was taken by surprise but said they may have been complacent heading into the game.



"As much as we spoke about it, our attitude going into the game probably wasn't what it needed to be."



The Reds escaped with no injuries and travel to the Central Coast of NSW to play the Waratahs next Saturday.

Queensland Reds 6 Western Force 32

Super 14 wooden-spooner Western Force promised better things ahead with a breakthrough thumping of Queensland at Ballymore today.

The well-drilled Force outmuscled and outclassed the Reds in the opening-round of the Australian Provincial Championship to celebrate their first win over a Super 14 rival on Australian soil.

It was an even more sweet victory for 12 of the Force's starting team who had either played for Queensland or grown up in the state, prompting Eddie Jones to pre-match brand the Force "Reds C".

With Wallabies selector Michael O'Connor in the stands, halfback Matt Henjak and hooker Brendan Cannon stood tall for the visitors to throw their hats in the ring for a European tour berth.

A fired-up Cannon was in the thick of the action in his first match in five months since neck surgery and even managed to score a rare try just before half-time for a 22-6 lead.






His day also included a late sin-binning, a trip to the blood-bin, and dust-ups with Queensland second-rowers Ed O'Donoghue and James Horwill as well as Reds stand-out David Croft.

Cannon also led the Force scrum for a tight-head and another scrum turnover which paved the way for a bonus point-clinching try to fullback Haig Sare from a cross field kick.

Henjak, a major disappointment in this year's Super 14, had the speedy Force backline purring off attacking lineouts with crisp wide service which allowed Junior Pelesasa to run riot in the midfield.

The Reds enjoyed plenty of ball but lacked composure and failed to provide the slick finishing touches needed to cross the well-organised visitors' line.

The Force jumped out of the gates with former Gold Coast schoolboy sprint champion Brett Stapleton crossing for two tries in the left corner in the opening seven minutes.

The writing was already on the wall for the ragged Reds after 105 seconds.

In that time Pelesasa had butchered one certain try with a poor cut-out ball and set up another with a last-pass that hit the mark of Stapleton.

Queensland coach Jones was left to rue a litany of errors and missed chances with several breaks unrewarded due to poor options or handling.

Cannon's try summed up their forgettable day when a Scott Daruda clearing kick sailed over the head of Brown, who slipped and then watched as the ball bounced wickedly into the path of Digby Ioane.

From the ensuing play, the 40-Test hooker got the ball on the wing, and even despite slipping over, had time to score.
