Larry,my uncle was a merchant seaman in the40s 50, and 60s.He went to Cuba , Sierra Leonne , Capetown, Cochin.etc I can remember as a kid my uncle saying bloody japies . They never stop talking talking. Hence yarp , yarp etc.

I think the word "japie/jaapie/yarpie" is supposed to come from an Afrikaans word for "farm boy", implying a rude or simple person. It's supposed to be fairly derogatory, and usually reserved for "white" South Africans.
