Australian Rugby Shield being revisited in 2021

Fantastic to see RugbyWA Perth Gold team (the best of local club rugby/amateurs) getting a chance to showcase what they can do.

The Perth Gold Team is a selection of WA’s best premier grade players, previously winning the Australian Rugby Shield in the mid 2000’s. During its prime the Western Australian team is known for their grit and determination. This tournament has now been resurrected, giving the WA team the chance to show their skill and technical abilities as rugby players.

The competition is set to go ahead from Thursday the 30th of September until Monday, the 4th of October. Intended to un-earth new talent from around the country, the competition will be making its comeback for 2021 after recently being placed on hold due to Covid-19.

An important step in the develop of rugby in Australia, the tournament identifies not only top players within the state of WA but nationally. Providing teams and developing players the chance to compete against each other at a higher level than normal competition, assisting players, coaches, managers and referees in their professional development.

Head coach, Alex Stajka, assistant coach Jono Owen, including a range of selectors have been assembling a list of potential Perth Gold squad players since the beginning of the season. They will be analysing Premier Grade games throughout the year, looking for players that display their best performance throughout the season in order to gain a spot on the team. After selection, the squad will commence training in the later parts of the season.

Teams taking place in the tournament include Western Australian Perth Gold Team, ACT State Team, NSW Country Team, Queensland Country team, Victoria State team and the host State Team, South Australia. Bringing talent from across the country together.

Men’s draws for the competition are currently being conducted as followed:

    Thursday – Pool Games
    Friday – Pool Games
    Saturday – Pool Games
    Sunday – Rest Day
    Monday – Finals
