    Is Anybody Still Around?

I have to admit I haven't taken much interest in the local rugby scene this year. There have been some changes in my life, and other priorities have arisen. However this backward stepping appears to be common among older former players and supporters I have encountered.

The fact that there is no coverage of local rugby on this site, and little to speak of on the RugbyWA site, doesn't help either.

I did however go down to my local club, Palmyra, a couple of Thursday nights ago to see what was going on, and heard that there were a few pre-season games about to take place but it seemed to me there was little enthusiasm or excitement over it compared to previous years.

There was disturbing news about several clubs, particularly ARKS, Coastal Cavaliers, Southern Lions and Curtin not having the numbers this year, and the perennial complaints about industrial scale poaching by Nedlands, Cottesloe and Associates. I heard very little if anything about how Kalamunda, Wests or Perth were travelling, but the general view was that Perth and Kala were struggling with depth as well.

Palmyra seemed to have retained much of there first and second grade contingent from last season, and from what little I saw the fitness level appeared quite high for this time of the year. I didn't notice many new faces however, which is worrying. Their club rooms have had a major upgrade in the off season.

It would be helpful in keeping up interests if those still involved in the local rugby scene could put up reports or comments of their observations, results of inter club matches, and player movements.

Wests Uni and Soaks had a 3 way hitout yesterday and Uni and Soaks gave Wests an absolute beating in all grades, Wests will only be making up the numbers this season and returning super coach Pugs deep pockets Grace will really have to earn his reported 3 thousand a week salary, a few customary handshakes here and there just won't cut it.

Soaks didn't look to have too many of the old KFC crew left but were quite well drilled with a handful of ex colts players along with a few new faces, I can see why Force star signing Miotti should have got a job as a carpenter if he wanted to make a bench.

Uni looked quite handy and the disenchanted from those Cott jerks slotted in quite well, rumblings of extremely large cash payments look to be on the money, excuse the pun.

Heard that the Roodogs gave Neddies a lube free right royal rogering and that Ra Ra of the Ba Ba's better lift his game because they are kaka. Recruitment specialist Bally had one job, actually in hindsight if Neddies can improve on last seasons seventh place finish then that's a step in the right direction, baby steps right.

Fulvio is down playing Paly's playing roster because I hear that they gave Cott a decent hiding yesterday, Cott supporters may have to be patient this season as they are blooding all their juniors and are focusing on youth development, okay I made that bit up and what I really meant is every time the local rugby community hear those jerks get rolled it brings tears of glee to everyone.

As more titbits of rumor, innuendo and outright bullshit with the occasional small pieces of truth thrown in come's to light I will do my best to enlighten the less informed.

Wests Scarborough 1st Grade juggernaut has played finals rugby each and every year since its inception and continues this remarkable feat yet again this season and unbelievably it's still rolling on and as an added little circle jerk for the masses Wests actually hold the record for the current longest unbroken finals record.

Kala are going just fine mate. KK, Cruze and the senior playing group adding some great culture at the club which will pay off on the field this year. The junior numbers look strong so far with a lot of new families coming down to the club for the first time. The back office also going really well with some ideas and initiatives generated out of the committee really paying off. The committee has been well represented across roles with a good mix of long long standing stalwarts and new participants. The new President (first female President for the club) is staying the course of the foundations laid down over the last few years and is well supported. The club is in the best position it has been in years by all metrics.

It helps that the last President and current Marketing Manager is an energiser bunny. The ideas and drive of the man makes it hard to keep up!

The RugbyWA Conference yesterday was well attended from all clubs and was good to meet a few people and listen to some of the presentations. I think the RA man expected a bit more harassment about past events but all questions mostly related to Rugby Explorer. I broke into the junior session which focused on dispensation and the schools initiative as the main topics so can’t comment on the senior session.

There is a trial game at the club this Tuesday evening so will see how the boys go in that hit out.

Interesting info on the Curtin front. We are looking at putting up 4 teams this year, and the numbers are the best i have seen since i started at the club 15 odd years ago.

They had a hit out against ARKs yesterday, but i am yet to hear how it all went.

I just love the smell of fresh horse manure in the afternoon, Westie.

    Keep it coming.

How did Joondalup go in their trial?

Numbers at Curtin are very good, 60+ at most trainings. (though numbers have never been a struggle)

The friendly against ARKs on the weekend was a bit of a non starter. Bringing less than 20 people (unsure if any were part of their prem grade setup) to play 4x 25minute quarters against a team that had over 60, was always going to be tough. They were probably up at halftime, and were competitive for the 3rd quarter (to be fair was a very solid effort from them in the heat), but started to blow out towards the end.

I think from rumblings the gap between the top and bottom of the comp is going to be a bit bigger and I am unsure if all the "lower" teams will make it to the start of the season (I hope they do). I'm excited to see how we are sitting and whether we are at a point to prove our worth to the comp by stringing a few more victories together. The build for us has probably been a bit slower than I expected, and we are still a while from where we would want to be but I believe we are doing it in the right way - one which is sustainable.

Only a foolish man would bet against a last minute change to the League structure. Surely it would be more beneficial to have a Div 1 and Div 2 so there are no more 10+ try pumping of teams. Promotion and relegation play off every year

    Div 1
    Cott
    Uni
    Soaks
    Wanneroo
    Paly
    Wests
    Kala
    Nedlands

    Div 2
    Bayswater
    ARKS
    Curtin
    Southern Lions
    Joondalup
    Cavs
    Irish

Well, I would agree with you, Rugaree, but if Westie Man is right in his prognostications above, Joondalup should go into first division and Wests should drop down to second for the first year.

And also maybe switch Nedlands for Perth in first division.

That should get a couple of nibbles. Good to see some friendly banter back in the local threads. Can it last?

I thought you would be pushing for paly to drop to second division while they rebuild from the drastic reduction in numbers and player quality you alluded to earlier?

Joondalup were supposed to play a 3 way trial with Wanneroo and nedlands but pulled out.

Wanneroo were stronger than Neddies in most games but I suspect a lot of Nedlands players are holding back for round 1. Eg the 3rd grade team they put out was their usual 4th grade

Gigs, you are only as good as your last game, and I was relying on Westie's assessment, not my own.

Don't go to 4 teams. Focus on depth in those you have.
