    Start Your Chickens

An interesting thing happened at the UWA versus Wests game last Saturday.
    .
It seems UWA made a great start, piling on points, and were about 20 points ahead, coasting towards a win.

The scoreboard showed the Uni score with a 30 in it and the Wests with a 9.

Then Wests woke up, and went on a spree of their own, grinding ever closer to Uni. You could cut the tension with a knife.

Suddenly the board showed only 2 points in it with Wests ahead 32 - 30 and seconds to go.

The referee gave Uni a penalty within range. The kick was true, and the scoreboard immediately showed 33 to 32 in Uni's favour.

Pandemonium broke loose. Uni players were kissing and hugging, and their crowd was deliriously engaged in a back slapping frenzy.

The Uni song was sung with an unparalleled gusto of derision.

Wests players sat unbelieving, dejected and forlorn on the ground.

Anyway, the game was over. It was what it was. The West crowd went home, except for the few officials and players who stayed on for appearances sake, and the Uni crowd celebrated into the evening light, not wisely but too well, until quiet was demanded for the making of an announcement.

The expectant crowd of Uni triumphants, an hour after the game, heard words to the following effect.

"There's been an error on the scoreboard. The referee [Cooper] has just advised that a conversion by Wests was not included in the score. West's actually won by a point."

Where was Mick Hughes? He'd have been able to provide the correct score

Maybe a silly question... BUT why did it take an hour for the refs score to be announced? Surely immediately after the game the Ref has to sign the team sheets, check his pocket score card matches the team sheets, and why didn't the UNI team manager rush onto the field interrupt the song and spill the beans? Sounds all a bit weird to me.

Maybe Westieman or someone from Uni would care to comment.

I thought of that too, Hansie, but it may not have been picked up until sometime after the teamsheets were signed, and the result then later queried from the referee.

Maybe the uni manager went by the scoreboard and didn't question what the referee marked on the team sheet.

I heard the story from a reliable source.

Maybe Wests picked it up later in the changeroom after doing a countback of who scored what, and challenged the referees score on the teamsheet.

My recollection from my days as a coach was that the Referee entered the scores on the team sheet.

The ref and both managers would make sure the scores matched before signing off on the team sheet when I last managed a side.

Sounds like everyone has screwed the pooch on this one.

It's Rugby Xplorer app these days. Both teams keep live scores (so you can check them remotely) on their mobile device of choice.

The ref's role is to check they both match and then it gets "finalised". More of a role to confirm cards (blue, yellow or red) are recorded.

The role of the home team and the scoreboard maintenance, however......

Righto after huge public demand I have decided to again impart my extensive knowledge of all things involving club rugby and call out the pretenders that although well intentioned basically make shit up and or have been ill informed.

Fulvio the match on Saturday between the good guys[us] and the scarfies played out like this, Wests ran in 6 tries and missed another 4 or 5 but converted just one, the portly fellow from Uni who has more clubs than Tiger Woods nailed 3 penalties and at the 70 minute mark it was 32-9,Wests suffered a few injuries and the lads were out on their feet when Uni ran in 3 quick tries and portly chap nailed all 3 conversions from wide out and kicked the winning penalty in injury time to win 33-32,never seen anything like it but that's sometimes how it rolls. The confusion arose when Wests manager mistakenly put us down for a conversion that missed, don't really think it's the refs job to do the scoreboard which was correct anyway, if you want the gospel guys all you had to do was ask.

Wests Scarborough 1st Grade juggernaut has played finals rugby each and every year since its inception and continues this remarkable feat yet again this season and unbelievably it's still rolling on and as an added little circle jerk for the masses Wests actually hold the record for the current longest unbroken finals record.

Next week, Hansie, your turn will come.

I'm only allowed to spend $10 a week by her indoors.

That should get me four beers at Nedlands, no?

It will barely get you one at Pally....
