Luke has returned to training with Bristol and is looking forward to hopefully playing in August.

For those who may be interested he's just become a dad - a daughter Matilda.

Australian fans will be able to watch live rugby this weekend after Rugby Australia and Foxtel completed their broadcast negotiations for Super Rugby Aotearoa and Super Rugby AU.
The deal means both competitions will be shown live on Fox Sports and streamed online through Foxtel Now and Kayo.

It also paves the way for the full Super Rugby AU draw to be officially confirmed. The fixtures for the Australian competition, which will kick off on July 3, will be released on Thursday morning.

Australian rugby will officially return at Suncorp Stadium on Friday July 3 with official confirmation of the Super Rugby AU competition this afternoon.

Rugby Australia confirmed in a statement on Wednesday that it had agreed on a broadcast deal with FOX SPORTS for the domestic competition, which will officially kick off next month.

The Reds and Waratahs will open the season at Suncorp Stadium on Friday July 3 and then the competition will head to Canberra on July 4 as the Brumbies face the Rebels.

The Western Force will play their first game in week two of the competition, based in an east coast hub.

Teams will play each other twice each before a two-week finals series, culminating in a September 19 grand final.

Under government restrictions, the competition will be played without crowds unless the advice around COVID-19 restrictions changes.

“We are excited to announce the return of professional Rugby in Australia and the kick-off of Vodafone Super Rugby AU on July 3," Rugby AU CEO Rob Clarke said.

“A huge thanks goes to our broadcast partner of 25 years, FOX SPORTS, who have backed the revised competition format for 2020 and have delivered the best possible news to Rugby fans across the country today. I offer my personal thanks to Foxtel Group CEO, Patrick Delany and Head of FOX SPORTS, Peter Campbell for their ongoing support of Rugby.

“We will continue to work closely with FOX SPORTS and Foxtel on the schedule for the international season following the revised Super Rugby tournament and look forward to making further exciting announcements with regards to our 2020 Test match schedule over the coming weeks.

“Our focus is now back where it should be, getting Vodafone Super Rugby AU up and running next month and watching our five Australian teams go head-to-head in week after week of Aussie derby action.

“Fans can also expect to see something different during the new season, as we use the opportunity to innovate and push the boundaries and we look forward to showcasing a new brand of Rugby throughout this 12-week competition.”

Head of FOX SPORTS Peter Campbell also confirmed that the network would be broadcasting the Super Rugby Aotearoa competition beginning this week.

“Rugby starved fans will be able to watch their favourite teams in viewer friendly timeslots each week. Additionally, Foxtel has also reached an agreement to air the New Zealand Super Rugby Aotearoa competition, which starts this weekend, so rugby fans can settle in to watch more of the sport they love," he said.

“The return of Super Rugby AU continues the return of live sport to our screens following the resumption of the NRL competition and this week the AFL premiership. We are beginning to see more sports announce and release their plans to return to competition and Foxtel is the best place to see it all.”

.................and then comes the hard bit.

Next on RA's checklist is to sit down with RUPA boss Justin Harrison and discuss whether players will continue on slashed salaries - they have already taken 60 per cent pay cuts, on average, across the board - until September 30. - SMH

One is about the restart with the full draw being dropped tomorrow. The other is in regards to the supposed conversation with a PE group.

The parties met last week and are taking discussions further, based on a 2021 competition model for the professional game that will most likely dismantle the 25-year-old SANZAAR partnership at Super Rugby level and put Australia's interests first.

Incoming Rugby Australia chairman Hamish McLennan confirmed the firm's interest and said while Test rugby and the grassroots game were off limits, Super Rugby was ripe for a shake-up.

"I haven’t spoken to KKR directly but obviously they are a seasoned and highly respected firm," McLennan said.

"We’ve had good inbound interest from UK and American private equity firms and I’m very open to continuing those discussions at a Super Rugby level.

"The time is right to have these discussions as we look to alternate funding mechanisms for the game. Anything I can do to free cash up to reinvest in grassroots rugby will be good for the game."

KKR is a highly regarded American firm with global reach, comparable in size to CVC, the firm that bought into the Six Nations, the UK Premiership and the Pro 14. CVC is also heavily rumoured to be in talks with South African rugby.

KKR has several businesses across multiple industries. Its only known sports investment was a 2016 move to buy a minority stake in mixed martial arts juggernaut UFC, along with fellow private equity firm Silver Lake. All up, the group's investment was worth $4 billion.

KKR's Australian arm is headed by David Lang. The firm last month spent $1.7 billion on a 55 per cent stake in bank Colonial First State. In 2019 it bought biscuit-maker Arnott's for $3.2 billion.

It is not clear on what terms the talks with KKR are progressing. With private investment, an individual or consortium might buy an outright stake in a football club (such as Bart Campbell with the Melbourne Storm or Harold Mitchell and Andrew Cox's purchase of the Rebels) or a competition (Larry Kestelman and the NBL). Australian sport does not have a long history of private equity involvement.

Only Archer Capital's $137 million investment in Supercars, headed by former RA director Peter Wiggs, which is widely acknowledged to have been a failure, stands as a home-grown example of a private-equity model in Australia.

Abroad, the model has traditionally revolved around a firm buying the commercial rights to a sport, as in the case of CVC's investment in the Six Nations and European professional rugby competitions.

Under that model, Six Nations Rugby retains control of the competition but CVC owns the right to market and sell its broadcast, sponsorship and other commercial rights.

In rugby's case, RA has no broadcast partner or competition format locked in for 2021, making it a potentially attractive investment for an external party. The competition is also at a low ebb with fans, giving RA and a partner the opportunity to start again with a fan-centred model that could claw back eyeballs and interest.

In rugby's case, any major change to the game's business model would have to be approved by the RA board but McLennan's comments confirm administrators are looking for new revenue sources.

This has been fuelled by seismic shifts in the sports broadcasting market, with traditional television and pay-TV providers signalling they can no longer pay big dollars for sports rights. This change was well under way pre-coronavirus but has been accelerated by the global shutdown of sport and major disruption to the advertising-driven business models of mainstream media companies.

In the past month, Nine, Seven and Foxtel have brokered discounted extensions with the NRL and AFL. The revised deal between RA and Fox for the rest of the 2020 competition was also expected to have been significantly reduced in cost.
