    Future Force academy

There's a story on The West website but its behind that dammed paywall. Someone said it was also in the Sunday Times too but I'm not buying that.
Anyone got access or have the Times?
This is all I could get.

Interested to see that (without any access either).

To hijack it in the meantime on a weird tangent (sorry) - while doing a search for that, I saw this:

Perth pushing to host final matches of English Premier League

    Posted Sun 3 May 2020, 2:23pm

A push for Perth to host the final matches for the English Premier League could be pulled off as a 'Plan B' to complete the season. The man who brought over Sheffield United FC and West Ham United FC to Australia, agent Gary Williams says 'the timing is absolutely brilliant' as he spoke to Clint Wheeldon on The Sunday Footy Forum. A lot has to go right; he needs four facilities, meetings with club officials and ministers, two-week isolation for players, as well as 20 clubs to sign off for the city to host 92 games.

Western Force young guns from Future Force Academy prove Rugby Australia wrong

For a club that Rugby Australia deemed not good enough to be a Super Rugby side, Western Force are doing a pretty good job breeding young international players.

From humble beginnings with just four players in 2016, their Future Force Academy has produced 41 graduates playing professional rugby around the world - a 78 per cent conversion rate.

In the last three seasons all 12 of the yearly intake have come from the local RugbyWA competition and, impressively, in the last two years a dozen players like Carlo Tizzano and Mike McDonald have gone onto junior Wallabies sides.
The academy is funded by the Future Force Foundation, RugbyWA, RA, and mining magnate Andrew Forrest’s Minderoo Foundation.

Forrest has pumped millions of dollars into the Force and Global Rapid Rugby since RA refused his $70 million offer to keep the club alive when they controversially axed them from Super Rugby to save the Melbourne Rebels.

Ironically RA has now invited the Force to join a new domestic competition with Australia’s Super sides. likely to start in early July.

Understandably, some academy players left after graduating to join Super sides before GRR was firmly established. Others are playing in Europe, South Africa and Japan among other countries.

However, this season one third of the 32-man Force squad is made up of local players, including academy products Tevin Ferris, Tom Sheminant, Ben Grant and Rory O’Sullivan.

The big challenge for director of rugby Steve Anderson, the academy foundation mentor, is to keep more players at home as GRR gains in strength.

Super sides already have their eyes on some of the current crop and Anderson says: “Keeping them at the Force. That is the aim. It has to be.

“We are retaining more kids. If you look at last year’s crop more are choosing to stay.

“We are convincing them that the model we’ve got supports their development.

“The longer we show a success rate, particularly kids graduating to that junior Wallaby level, the more we will see them want to stay.

“We’re doing OK ...not bad for a state not recognised by many as a rugby state.

“We’re getting credibility for our work and the longer we are here as a productive academy the more you will see these kids stay in the programme and graduate to the Force.

“When you have a dozen in two years going through the junior Wallabies….we’re not doing too badly are we.”

Anderson uses what he calls “gap analysis” to recruit academy members.

Force coach Tim Sampson identifies his priorities and Anderson and his staff find the talent from the local competition.

He says the Future Force Academy has a more streamlined programme than other states that use a much larger intake.

“Rugby Australia understands that we are producing talent and supporting it. They have obviously taken notice at national level,” Anderson said.

“The programme has evolved. We are ticking boxes. Rugby Australia has our programming, our framework.

“We don’t hide anything. We’ve clearly articulated what we set out to do.”

They made their choices. We have new players now.

These guys should head to Japan. Seems to be where lots of Premiership players are headed.

Whoah! Hang on a minute! Do you mean to say even a local product is off your radar after trying out in the only competition which offers a pathway to national representation? I don't think I can support that concept

Guys like Tizzano and McDonald are so good they’d have had the same chance of national representation if they had stayed here. Steve Anderson would have made sure of that. They chose to go elsewhere. Not blaming them for that in any way - it’s entirely up to them. But I’m not going to welcome them back like long lost brothers because they’ve got nowhere else to go.

At the time they signed the contracts (which was during the NRC, IIRC - there was talk of them leaving then) the Wallabies were still Cheika's side and even if they had been promised that Force players would be eligible for Wallaby selection after the RWC, only one Force player had been selected for a representative side, and that was Rocket Rod for the 7s. I wouldn't blame any player for feeling that actions speak louder than promises and if they wanted to represent Australia they needed to have a Super Rugby contract with Rugby Australia rather than a Force contract with Rugby WA.

I think these young kids were given all sorts of glittery promises and prospects from the SR sides about their future . The lack of interest shown from RA to the Western Force and RugbyWA would not have gone unnoticed..... what they wouldn’t have anticipated is sitting on the fringes not getting a game in SR Basically lured away as backups and fillers.....

Take of those Force tinted glasses. There is no way any player not playing super rugby would make the wallabies (nor should they!). The force play in a substandard league (if you can even call it a league), for developing players they need to be training, playing against the best in the country, that's super rugby. So to think a force player is going to play for the wallabies given the current standard is ridiculous.

Look at it for what it is, we still have a ''pro team'', we still offer pathways for up and coming players but at this current time the pathway leads to players moving onto bigger and better things then just playing for the Force.

Pruc, You may have to eat those words, in a few months, when the Force play "the best in the country that's super rugby"
