Former Wallaby Herbert, Virgin Blue founder, Supercars chairman to join RA Board

    From rugby.com.au

With the nominations process completed on Monday, a notice was issued to members confirming the trio to take up posts at the AGM on March 30.

Godfrey and Herbert are both board-appointed positions while Wiggs' role is as a member-elected director.

The trio will replace former chairman Cameron Clyne, who stood down from his post last month, deputy chairman and ex-Wallaby Brett Robinson and director Ann Sherry on the board.

Current chairman Paul McLean is expected to stand down at the end of July after taking over from Clyne as Rugby Australia's broadcast negotiations continue.

Once he does stand down, one of Wiggs or Godfrey is expected to be the most likely to take over the leadership of the board in the long-term.

Godfrey is a high-profile Australian businessman who helped launch Australian airline Virgin Blue and was CEO of the company until 2010.

The Victorian is chairman of the Tasmanian AFL Taskforce, leading the push for a Tasmanian team in the AFL and the chairman of Tourism and Events Queensland as well.

Wiggs is the current chairman of the V8 Supercars, airport services company AeroCare and the founder of private equity firm Archer Capital, which still holds a major stake in the motor sport competition.

Herbert will fill a former player position on the board, replacing Robinson, after moving into the corporate realm.

The former Test centre played 67 times for the Wallabies, before moving to France and playing for USA Perpignan until injury ended his career.

Herbert spent time working with the Queensland Reds in a range of roles before moving into the corporate realm, currently CEO of SSKB - Strata manager.

The nominations leave Pip Marlow as the only female non-executive director on the board, a stark decrease from only two years ago when Sherry and Liz Broderick were also members of the administration.

The Rugby Australia will convene for its Annual General Meeting on March 30.

Maybe Archer Capital would like to invest in Rugby Australia. And maybe Virgin Australia and SSKB would like to be sponsors. Heaven knows RA needs all the money it can get right now.

So were these three the only applicants or only ones that got past the Nominations Committee?

Yes, but weren't the states campaigning to bring a list of their own candidates to the AGM and press for them to be appointed?

I would suggest a FUARU action like that is the only chance Stookie has of getting a seat.

In terms of bankers Pip Marlow is still there.

The Brumbies opposed FOSUFC member Mortimer becoming Chairman if Joe Roff isn’t appointed to the board. No Roff, no Brumbies representative time get their voices heard.

RA would have worked behind the scenes to secure their agreement to these three to make sure that will not happen. May even have thrown some money at them to sweeten the deal (it probably wouldn’t be the first time). Plus, aren’t the 3 from Vic, QLD and NSW so all bases covered?

There has been a vacant seat all year and Rorke might get the tap on the shoulder.

So it's business as usual - nothing will change - too little, too late. And Clyne is still with Castle in London making sure he gets a last meddle in any negotiations.

If we seceded we could make our own board. Geoff Stooke can be the CEO and Twiggy can be chairman.

Am I reading that right? By the looks of that piece there seems a possibility that RA could end up being chaired by a Victorian who is charged with promoting AFL expansion. Seems a little bit "fox in the chook pen" doesn't it? Or at least conflicts of interests.
