    Junior Wallabies 2020

SQUAD NEWS: Junior Wallabies assemble in Canberra, full squad list

The Junior Wallabies assemble for their first camp of 2020 this weekend as they bid to go one better than last year's runner-up World Rugby U20s finish this season.

There are a host of returning faces from that successful team this year, including flanker Carlo Tizzano, winger Mark Nawaqanitawase and prop Angus Bell, as well as some exciting prospects from the Schools & U18s team that beat New Zealand in Hamilton in their 2019 clash.

The AIS facilities have reopened after closing earlierr this week due to the hazardous air quality present in Canberra, enabling the Junior Wallabies to forge ahead with training.

This week's conditions were bad enough to force the Brumbies to train in Canberra and the Junior Wallabies were monitoring the situation this week, with contingency plans in place had they needed to move.

There are other prospects who could loom as squad members later this year, ruled out due to Super Rugby trials.

"We’re excited to kick off our campaign in 2020 and get together as a group," Junior Wallabies coach Jason Gilmore said.

“There are a handful of players who are unavailable for selection due to Super Rugby trials, which gives us the opportunity to have a look at some more players."

This week's is the first camp of 2020, ahead of the Oceania U20 Championships and the World Rugby U20 Championships in Italy in the middle of the year.

Great result. Don't the Rebels have an academy or were no Victorians picked?

One. Hard to pick out in the wall of Reds and Tahs though.

Well at least the under20 selectors recognise that are some players in WA that could be good enough to represent Australia.

Six RugbyWA players out of total out of total of 52 invited to the U20 camp is about 11% or 12%. Nice if 3 of them can make into the team.

Unlike the Wallaby selectors who invite zero percent from the Force to their camps.

Took the words right out of my mouth, all the effort and assistance - what's coming through from VIC grass roots. Maybe sour grapes still, but anyway Congrats to the local boys, and kudos to everyone behind them.

Does anyone know what local clubs these WA guys played their junior rugby for?

Byron is a Queenslander and Ollie is from Perth, not sure what club or where the others are truly "from", but I hear ya Fulvio.

I think there might be a few "Victorians" that came from across the Nullarbor now too, they (the media) can only report them as from where they are "currently" playing/contracted.

NSW Tahs signed 2 of our "real" WA developed boys this year. ie Went to school here. These things happen in the professional game. But the main thing is WA is developing lots of young players, even if some of them came from elsewhere.

I see one of our "WA" boys, Carlo Tizzano, scored a a couple of tries in the Tahs trial game against the highlanders and impressed Rob Penney the coach.

Carlo is still U20 I believe, and will no doubt be selected again for Aus u20 side, even if his name is not in the U20 training squad.

I was bored so I watched a replay of the Tahs v Highlanders trial game after reading my own comments above.
    https://www.rugby.com.au/videos/2020...hs-highlanders

At half-time the Director of rugby in NSW was blabbing on to the Sydney commentators about all the young talent the Tahs had and their development paths etc in NSW. No mention of the two WA boys.

Then after halftime Tizzano (open-side flanker) and McDonald (scrum half) came on.

Tizzano had a blinder and the commentators were raving about him. I watched him closely in his white head gear and number 25 shirt. He made his own two tries and tackled like a demon. Watch out Michael Hooper!

And then McDonald outshone the fancied Jake Gorden who was scrumhalf in the first half.
