Dave Rennie reveals he has been approached over All Blacks job

    08:49, Nov 01 2019

Glasgow Warriors head coach Dave Rennie has revealed he's been approached by New Zealand Rugby officials to become the next All Blacks coach, raising the prospect of an Anzac tug-of-war.

Former Chiefs coach Rennie has never coached an international side, but is the only coach to lead the Chiefs Super Rugby titles in 2012 and 2013.

He left to coach in Scotland in 2017.

Rennie has also been linked to the Wallabies role vacated by Michael Chieka after his team lost to England in the Rugby World Cup quarterfinals.

Reports out of Australia in September said Rugby Australia had informed its staff that Rennie would take the job.

Rennie was first linked to the Wallabies job in March, but in an interview with STV News in Scotland it appeared he was keen to replace All Blacks coach Steve Hansen.

Hansen will leave the job after Friday's bronze medal playoff against Wales, having held it since 2012 and being involved in two World Cup wins.

But Rennie appears to have his sights on coaching his country of birth, replacing Steve Hansen, who has held the role since 2012.

"Obviously it's flattering, it's humbling. They've [New Zealand] always been such a great side," Rennie told STV News in Scotland.

"I guess I haven't had a lot of time to dwell on that because I'm totally focused on what I'm doing here.

"They've probably made contact with a number of Kiwis who are coaching over this way about interest for the role.

"They will have a process where they interview then make an appointment in the new year."

As for the Rugby Australia report, Rennie said: "There's going to be speculation all the time when new jobs are up for grabs.

"They are naming a number of people, I guess, who are potential replacements for both of those jobs. I guess time will tell."

Rennie is contracted to the Glasgow Warriors until June 2020.

All Blacks assistant Ian Foster, Japan coach Jamie Joseph and Crusaders coach Scott Robertson are said to be among those interested in replacing Hansen.

Could be a blessing in disguise. Of course NZ are going to interview him but hopefully they delay the decision long enough which forces our hand to look elsewhere

I agree. Let’s find the best coach available, hopefully an Aussie if he exists, but interview all prospects not just jump at first available or my mate applicants!

The best Aussie coach is probably right now Tim Sampson coaching the Force. But luckily for the Force and us, they wont even look at him, because he is not coaching in sooper dooper rugby. Hopefully we can get another 2 years and two NRC trophies out of him, before the RA wake up.

My thought is that Bernie Larkham was shoved aside last year because Chiek didn't give the authority he needed to be an influence. RA may said, were just gunna sit you over here until after RWC and then we will do an international search for a replacement and you can have the job with 100% support. Would they be smart enough to have done that?

I do believe Bernie is a better coach that he was allowed to be under Chiek.

Both RC and Clyne were enjoying the hospitality at the World Rugby Awards last night. Crisis? What crisis?

The short answer is no. But they for sure would have been devious and dumb enough to have said that and then head-hunted Rennie anyway.
