San Diego sign ex-Force flyhalf Luke Burton

    Americas Rugby News
    September 10, 2019

The San Diego Legion have added another new name for the 2020 Major League Rugby season. Former Australia u20 standout

Luke Burton arrives after spending the past two seasons in France with Biarritz Olympique. He is the seventh new signing on the off-season for the Legion.

Burton played in two u20 Championships with Australia before earning a Super Rugby contract with the Western Force. In his second season he played in 16 matches but a persistent foot injury all but wiped out his third season and limited his fourth to just six games.

When the Force were dropped from Super Rugby, Burton opted to make the move to France where he would spend two seasons with Biarritz. A shoulder injury knocked him out of the second half of the 2018-19 season and he will now change pace again with the move to the North American league.

The 25-year-old is most often used at flyhalf but is equally adept at inside center or fullback. Burton’s attacking flair and strength in defense could also see Joe Pietersen shifted to fullback. While not a specialist goal kicker, Burton has a reliable right boot from hand and off the tee.

    Good on him.

I like where this MLR comp is headed, as well. It will be a success.

Former All Blacks star Ma'a Nonu makes surprise move to Major League Rugby
    14:00, Oct 10 2019

Ma'a Nonu has signed a contract with Major League Rugby club San Diego Legion for 2020.
Former All Blacks star Ma'a Nonu has made a surprise switch to the relatively unknown Major League Rugby competition in the United States.

In a massive coup for both the club and competition, the 37-year-old midfielder has signed for San Diego Legion ahead of the 2020 campaign.

"Ma'a is a huge addition for us. It is undeniable that he will have a major impact on the MLR this season," San Diego coach Rob Hoadley said.

"He is a world class player who has proven himself to be one of the greats of the game. His talent and leadership will be a perfect addition to the San Diego Legion organisation."

Nonu returned to New Zealand to play for the Blues after three seasons with French club Toulon but was unable to force his way back into the national team frame ahead of the Rugby World Cup.

"I'm really grateful to be joining the San Diego Legion and to play in the MLR for the 2020 season," Nonu said.

"I'm looking forward to the challenge of the new season ahead with the team. My family and I are excited about the move to San Diego."

Out of the Blues again? That's weird. Is it because Hore is moving in?
