Christian leaders have written to Prime Minister Scott Morrison and Opposition Leader Bill Shorten to demand they protect religious beliefs as the future of controversial rugby star Israel Folau fuels debate over freedom of speech as an election issue.

Labor has also been criticised by the Anglican church in a separate development, for being out of touch with western Sydney voters.

The letter to Mr Shorten details concerns that Labor Party policies do not go far enough to protect religious freedom and have the potential to impact on the free expression of traditional views of sexuality and marriage. It asks Labor for an assurance that religious institutions will continue to be able to hold such views and defend them in public.

he Liberal Party has committed to introducing a Commonwealth Religious Discrimination Act, but the religious leaders asked the Prime Minister to go further by protecting believers in associations including churches, mosques, charities, schools and corporations.

On Tuesday, Folau was found to have committed a high-level breach of Rugby Australia’s professional players’ code of conduct for his social media post last month which said homosexuals, fornicators, adulterers and other groups were destined for hell unless they repented.

While the letters do not reference Folau, one of the nine signatories is Rev Dr Hedley Fihaki from the Assembly of Confessing Congregations of the Uniting Church in Australia, who like Folau is of Tongan background and said his "situation is affecting all of us".

"If Israel is not free to express his religious beliefs, which are taken directly from scripture, then the implications for preachers like myself is that we too will be shut down and our contracts are also under threat," Mr Fihaki told the Herald.

I have no doubt RA fucked up anything they possibly could. It appears though the agréement with RUPA precludes inserting extra clauses that could be detrimental to the player.

That said Izy is toast. He has clearly breached the code of practice, they don't need special clauses. In fact Izys problem is he did use social media, and has kept the post up. If he just used his much touted "freedom of speech" and preached from the pulpit to his god fearing congregation, he and everyone else would be in a much happier position.

They tried but Folau didn’t sign the paperwork and sent it back. The RA also put out a public press release stating that they intend to terminate his contract. Uncle Cam hasn’t said boo in regards to this matter and Castle has taken the heat. Given his lack of character not surprised that he has done that.
