This is from Growden's column in the SMH:

Rugby Australia will be contacted by high-ranking sporting officials who have been concerned about the possibility of match fixing of a Wallabies match several years ago.

The officials have serious doubts about the behaviour of at least three Wallabies players - all of whom still have considerable links to Australian Rugby - either in an on- or off-field capacity.

It involves a match Australia was strongly favoured to win. The opposition were at highly attractive odds with several betting agencies. The Wallabies lost the match following numerous strange incidents, including dubious forward passes, easy tackles being missed, confounding knock-ons and easy midfield kicks going nowhere near their target.

Adding to the concerns was rugby officials had been aware for some time of close links between several players and a controversial horse racing identity. They were also understood to be friends with a SP bookmaker. The players were sighted - individually or as a group - with either the racing identity or the SP bookie on numerous occasions both in Australia and overseas. One experienced player, who had financial issues, appeared to be "the ring-leader".

Several Australian rugby identities were at the time deeply concerned about this Wallabies loss, prompting a "top-secret" investigation. Apart from team officials being questioned, the investigation involved contacting Australian betting agencies to check whether there was any unusual betting trends on that match.

They were informed it was near impossible to detect, as a common procedure for dubious sporting bets at that time was to be placed with overseas agencies, quite often New Zealand. Usually bets were made in a variety of ways to camouflage "the sting".

One of the concerned officials told Ruck & Maul this week: "This issue has to again be looked into. Our suspicions were originally raised due to the very strange mistakes made by usually reliable Australian players during that game. Some errors are glaring. It’s like watching Tiger Woods miss a two-inch putt, over and over again. Very odd."

Ruck & Maul was told by RA sources that Wallaby teammates were also concerned with the behaviour of several members of this group following several "sordid" late night incidents.

A referee’s performance in another lost Wallabies match is also being scrutinised. This is believed to follow several dubious "points shaving" bets on the game from sports-gamblers in India.

I knew we should have won that Rugby World Cup Final against the Darkness in 2015.

Cant believe that we threw that game.

    So did that consortium of gamblers put together a package of Mssrs. Chieka & Gray in charge to;
    A) Go on a continued run of losses, making lucrative quinella's
    B) Cover up the previous profits by making it look like a loss of form or
    C) Lull the world into a false sense of security to get the best odds for a World Cup win in 2037

At this juncture, it can only be described as irony, surely ...

Yeah, but who's who? Quade (very young at this point) does all those mistakes on a good day, always has. And the unnamed sauce says "usually reliable players" which rules him out.

Mitchell Gits AAC? Palu? He has a shady past! Surely not George!

Giteau doesn’t fit in to the current active former Wallaby involved in regular off field work for the team. I doubt Palu has anything to do with the team off the field.

But hasn't it been reported this is from only a couple of years ago?

The clue is likely to be in this paragraph.

That would rule out Hoiles and Mitchell. As far as I know they have never been involved in 'sordid' late night incidents.

Growden's column said the match was 'several years ago'.

If the Wallabies got done for match fixing it would be amazing. Just the kick in the face that RA needs after the past few years
