Brendan Cannon: Cameron Clyne and Raelene Castle missing in action as rugby fails
    SEPTEMBER 28, 2018
It was the greatest honour of my sporting life to wear my country’s colours in the international rugby arena.

I write this column as a concerned former player, rugby supporter and rugby parent.

I cannot sit back and be silent anymore, unlike those who run the game.

Rugby Australia seems to think it’s acceptable to remain invisible while the drowning noise of disenchantment and frustration among our rugby family grows by the day.

I am staggered by the anonymity of chairman Cameron Clyne.

The code is facing its greatest crisis and he is nowhere to be seen or heard.

Clyne was front and centre last year.

    Where are you now Cameron?

Your voice, your influence and your presence matters, to help lift rugby up as it falters.

Your platform and capacity to promote the game in a multitude of ways is without limitation. You made the highly contentious and emotionally-charged decision to axe the Western Force last year.

You fronted up then, beside Bill Pulver, to stand as one on the decision.

Why then in the year that has followed and the game is being challenged on multiple levels do you disappear?

I am constantly approached on the street by people asking me, ‘What is going on with rugby?’ I have no answers for them.

I don’t know what Rugby Australia plans to do about rapidly diminishing crowd figures, television audiences, and growing lack of interest in the game. Because they haven’t told us.

I don’t know what their vision is for the future of Super Rugby, The Rugby Championship, and how the next broadcast agreement will work for Australia’s interests. Because they haven’t told us.

I don’t know why the Wallabies structure hasn’t undergone a significant review when the team is at an all-time low seventh in the world rankings. Because they won’t tell us.

Other codes share a united front.

The AFL and the ARL chairmen promote their games and proactively engage in its direction and provide public influence.

AFL commission chairman Richard Goyder and chief executive Gillion McLachan jointly work towards the game’s consitition that proclaims they are a “keeper of the code”.

NRL chief Todd Greenberg and ARL commission chairman Peter Beattie have joint responsibilities for fostering, developing and funding the game from the junior to the elite levels.

Clyne and RA chief Raelene Castle are missing in action.

On April 12, 2016, the Australian Rugby Union announced the Australian Rugby Strategic Plan for 2016-2020, with a vision “to inspire all Australians to enjoy our great global game”.

    The four pillars are:

    1. Make rugby a game for all – our community

    2. Ignite Australia’s passion for the game – our fans

    3. Build sustainable success in the professional game – our elite teams

    4. Create excellence in how the game is run – our administration.

    We’re two years in.

I’ve read those four mission statements over and over again, and I don’t know whether to laugh or cry.

I've been thinking about Clyne's low profile this year for a while. My only thought is that given the poor PR image he has, not just in WA, he has taken a back seat to allow Mrs Castle take the limelight. Now I sense that too is back firing.

Start with 4 ( simple fix ) and 1 2 and 3 will take care of themselves. A passionate article from Brendan Cannon ... hopefully more ex players will speak up in the near future.

Enjoyed reading that article from Brendan Cannon. You can tell the guy is genuinely hurting and doesn't like being a witness to the game going down the toilet whilst our weak and gutless administration allow it to happen. Jeremy Paul is another who passionately opposes Clyne and the board and everything they have done and are doing to Rugby in Australia. The problem is the game was on a knife edge for so long it could not afford any bad leadership and now obviously it has now begun its enormous fall from grace, almost titanic like.

No one knows how to get rid of Clyne and the board so we can start the healing process because they are tied in with the NSWRU And QRU who are selfishly and desperately hanging onto their little power sphere of power aswell. The game is toxic, it's become unwatchable and unlikable on so many levels that the fans have literally walked away, these fans are impatient with RA's unwillingness to change from being a tosh inner boys circle to a proper governing body like AFL has. I share Cannons frustrations and like him I just dont know what to do, maybe just laughing at the Wallabies /WallaTahs is all I can really do.. I wonder what Alan Jones has to say, and I wish new Ltd would un-gag Jeremy Paul, I really want to know what Jeremy has to say.

Maybe it has to do with the Banking Royal Commission where his credibility as a business director has been torn to shreds.

Well Jeremy Paul is still there after hammering the Foxsports commentary team and their ties to the RA.

    4. Create excellence in how the game is run – our administration.
And how does the ARU/RA's recent treatment of the WA Rugby Community stand up against those four pillars?

    1. Make rugby a game for all – our community "When Perth’s Super Rugby team, the original Western Force, was about to be shut down, he [John Edwards, Chairman RugbyWA] recalls it was RA’s intention to also close the NRC team on the grounds it would quickly lose its competitive edge following the Force’s demise. 'It was definitely under threat,' Edwards told The Australian yesterday [9 January 2018]. 'We had to fight hard to keep it. In the end, they (RA) felt they couldn’t do with any more bad press.'"
By shutting down both the Western Force and the Perth Spirit, the ARU/RA would in effect have cut off the WA Rugby Community from the rest of the Australian Rugby Community.
As for the money saved by the culling of the Force which was to be made available for community rugby, ...
    2. Ignite Australia’s passion for the game – our fans “This is a sad day for rugby, especially for Western Force fans. We accept that there will be anger and resentment over this decision and we sympathise with those fans. We sincerely hope that they are not lost to the game forever” [Cameron] Clyne said [on 1 August 2017].
The ARU/RA acknowledged that their actions would destroy the fan base in WA and leave no target for the passion of those fans.
    3. Build sustainable success in the professional game – our elite teams The ARU/RA tried to kill off professional rugby in WA and would have succeeded, without the intervention of Minderoo.
    4. Create excellence in how the game is run – our administration Enough said!

From Geoff Parkes in his latest version of the Wrap meow:

    Bakkies

Very happy for you to contribute and to argue the toss about any of the points relevant to the article.

But cutting and pasting the same third party article into mine and Spiro’s pieces just because you have an anti-RA obsession is childish and obsessive.

Write your own articles. Make your case and build your following that way if you can. In the meantime do us a favour and stop boring me and others to tears.

It's only the people in the establishment that are bored of the anti RA movement. All the real fans want a revolution.
