THE Brumbies have warned members the Super Rugby club could fold if crowds continue to decline.
It comes on the back of their second lowest ever crowd when they held an Australian derby with Melbourne at GIO Stadium this month.

The Brumbies aim to almost triple that figure of 5283 for their next match against the Sunwolves on June 3.

But in an email sent to members, chief executive Michael Thomson and chairman Phil Thomson explained the dire predicament and pleaded for more support.

“We know you want rugby to thrive in this region and, in part, to achieve this, we need a successful side playing in front of big crowds,” the email reads.

“The funds attendance at games enables us to invest back into our programs... and without your support and those funds the Brumbies may no longer exist.”

After the nightmare attendance against the Rebels, the Brumbies have drawn on three Canberra charities to help lift numbers.

If the Brumbies reach their targeted crowd of 15,000, they will donate $5000 to each organisation.

It would easily top their biggest crowd for the year (13,515), which came against arch rivals the Waratahs.

Michael Thomson said the declining figures could be put down to the team’s struggles on the field, troubles within Super Rugby and an ageing stadium in an inconvenient location.

He pointed to the history of sport in Canberra in hope of a quick turnaround.

“Scheduling is a challenge but if we play the right football, we play entertaining and continue to connect with our community we’re confident people will come,” Thomson said.

“If you look at the history of sporting teams in Canberra, sometimes they turn quickly and we’re confident if we continue to do the right things people will come back.”

hahhaha.. my money is on less (paid ticket numbers) against the Sunwolves on the 3rd of June.

Well Done ARU you had the opportunity to merge Ponies & Rabbles but you kicked out the most successful team (off field) with onfield results coming as seen in 2017...

I think there's a few more on the Slipper Coke Trail at the ARU.

Meh. If the Force were still there, the only topic of conversation to distract from the whole situation would be how it was the real cause of the issues and still had to be cut. Probably well out of it all and long may it continue. Fuck 'em.

They wont get anywhere near 15k for the Sunwolves game. They will be lucky to get another 4-5k, and even less if its an icey night.

By the time the Rabble get to Perth they will be playing un front of an antendance that will be 4-5 times bigger than what they have become used to. This is the legacy of Clyne and co.

We shouldnt forget that as recently as a year ago we were getting crowds of similar numbers although not quite as bad..... people under estimate the power of a successful team

I'm confident that all of these issues would have been addressed in the Great Big Spreadsheet - but unfortunately it's never seen the light of day.

If you recall on the basis of this analysis the Brumbies were quickly removed from any further considerations or analysis.

Gives us an indication of the quality of the work.......

Its more the size of the Melbourne population verse the size of their crowds which is really worrying. It appears that only Rebel games against a few of the NZL sides attract respectable crowds

The Brumbies are a huge concern because they are in a rugby heartland and Rugby throughout most of the late 90s and through the 00's was bigger than any other sport in the ACT, and the Brumbies were even bigger than the Raiders. Now its neck and neck with maybe even the Raiders out in front. The crowds have gone awful year after year from the days of Bruce stadium to the more recent days of GIO stadium

Cameron Clyne's mission is to Shrink to greatness!!!!

At the end of the day, the board of RA needs to face reality. The method they used to destroy the Western Force has shattered the confidence and trust that fans, players and sponsors at all levels have in Australian Rugby Union.

For the governing body to avoid transparency and collaboration to try and solve a collective problem, to engage in subterfuge and questionable tactics, to go through the courts and then force a club into Voluntary Administration is the sole cause of the drop in crowds and lack of interest in Super Rugby in Australia.

No body trusts RA, no body wants to engage because if that is how they treat the Force, how would they treat me?

Things will get a lot worse, no Bledisloe cup win for Wallabies, in fact a realistic likelihood of 3-0 loss to Ireland, very likely to be eliminated in quarters at RWC.

When the governing body lacks integrity and trashes the ethos of the code, hell bent to bully their constituents into submission, everyone sees them for whom they are and no-one wants to be a part of it.

This Chairman, board, past and present CEO's will forever be remembered as destroying a once proud, ethical, honourable and vibrant code and community.

Brumbies promotion for home games is pretty poor. However the axing fiasco and jobs for the boys coaching appointments has hit this side hard. The fans know that too. Up until April last year the crowds and performances were reasonable.

The players for a long period of time disengaged from the community. Jake White corrected this but a lot of the fans haven't come back.

The organisation gets fark all from the RA to distribute to grassroots so there is a disconnect between the clubs and head office. Rugby WA and the ACT and SNSWRU both received less than half of what the VRU received for grassroots last year. This needs to be pointed out to the Senate Committee and the Government.

The Brumbies deep down know the future is with Twiggy. They have already made it public that they want to know more about his plans.

About all we can do at this stage is laugh, because nearly everything to do with Professional Rugby in Australia has now descended into the realm of the absurd: for example,

    • the Brumbies' offer of bribes (in the form of donations to charities) to encourage attendance at the Super Rugby match in Canberra on 3 June
    • the popping of champagne corks in the Moore Park offices this week because the Waratahs won against the Highlanders last weekend and therefore everything to do with Professional and Super Rugby in Australia has been fixed and all is now good
    • the underhand dealings regarding the sale of the Melbourne Rebels which are still being investigated, and the ever-deepening financial black hole which is the Melbourne Rebels
    • etc.

I know it's not funny, but what else can you do, apart from supporting WSR?

I am going to write to the Brumbies to tell them that it is time to move on from Rugby Australia's 'plans' and arrange a conversation with Twiggy as what is going on is not working and the RA have given you fark all assistance over the past 23 years to help develop Rugby in a region that includes the Australian sporting nursery that is the Riverina. You can't do development off the back of 130k from the RA and trying to balance the books tightly.

The Brumbies should host the Force with assistance from Twiggy's team with a portion of money distributed to both state unions for grassroots. It will be worth more than 130k.

I believe a match in Perth was looked at after Super Rugby now it is clear the Brumbies won't make the Finals time to get moving.

The scariest thing is the complete inaction by RA, they are just standing aside and letting this all happen without making any attempt to stop the huge deline in spectator interest and sponsorship interest, and even media interest in super rugby. If I miss a game I can go a whole werkend without hearing a single result on the radio or FTA TV , nothing. There is no exposure to rugby in Australia and given all the negativity around the game there is now only bad exposure when it does happen.

The game has ruined itself so much over the last 5 years that its almost certainly about to get to the stage where it will simply be unrecoverable and Rugby as a sport will simply be a waste land with empty fields, rusty goal posts, and clubs merging together for team numbers and begging for pads and balls to train on. The game is a joke. Its an embarssment. And we are all powerless to do anything about it due to the crony structure the RA operates under. Its a dictatorship.

What really worries me is that the people who run Rugby at the national level in Australia do not appear to understand, nor to be capable of thinking through, what they are doing.

They do not strike me as being the cleverest caterpillars on the cabbage leaf.

A match between the Force and Brumbies (aka Spirit vs Vikings) would be a good idea.
