The new dawn for WA Rugby takes shape

    Hi all,

The following is the text of a letter that has gone out to the WA rugby community today. I think it will put a smile on a lot of faces

    Rugby WA Update

    1. As you are all aware over the last months of 2017 there were a range of matters being addressed in relation to Rugby WA, the processes associated with Voluntary Administration and the reconciliation of a number of debts. These matters have been addressed in two previous letters of correspondence from the Rugby WA Board so it is not the intent of this communication to deal with these aspects further. Suffice to say we are well on the road to recovery.

    2. In these letters it was indicated that a community information session would be held to provide an insight into the planning and opportunities for Rugby into the future. It is the Rugby WA Board’s intent that this will still occur, however due to a range of very positive elements that are now only just starting to come together this will now be postponed from 17th January, and undertaken in early February.

    3. Rugby is still strong and alive in WA! The key points to highlight for the game in WA are as detailedbelow. Thesewillallbeelaboratedinoninarangeofcommunicatio nsanddiscussions with a variety of stakeholders over the forthcoming weeks.

    4. Community Operations:
➢ Competition planning for all levels continues as normal.
o Seniors new multi club competition starts Round 1, post Easter 7th April.
o Juniors post Term 1 Holidays, Round 1, 5th May.
➢ Planning for a new format of a 10 A side pre-season tournament for Busselton on Sat 24th
February continues with clubs being engaged in the structure and format for this event.
    ➢ Two Sumer Sevens Tournaments:
o Cockburn 7’s at Southern Lions on Sat 3rd Feb.
o Swan River 7’s at Nedlands on Sat 3rd March.
➢ Education and courses. There are multiple opportunities to commence or hone coaching
and match official’s skills and qualifications. These are offered in a range of locations so if
you are interested in refreshing or joining the ranks then please take the chance now.
➢ Full details on all these are all available through the Rugby WA website at
    www.rugbywa.asn.com.au

    5. High Performance Pathway (HPP):
➢ The HPP for 2018 is already underway with the first of the State Teams well into training.
➢ The Women’s team are hard at their preparation for the new Super Women’s competition
scheduled to kick off on 11 March.
➢ WA will host 2 home games in the 6 match season over March and into early April, against
all the other Super Rugby associated Women’s teams.
➢ The various age academies will be commencing in February with a number of levels of
Future Force Foundation sponsored scholarships to be announced.
    West Australian Rugby Union Inc.

    6. National Rugby Competition – WA Team:

➢ This week Rugby Australia stated that WA would have a team competing in this competition through to the end of 2020, when the current Super TV rights deal concludes.
➢ Preparations are underway for the development of the WA team and a full plan will be
announced once these are finalised between all key stakeholders.
➢ Please be assured this is one of the really exciting prospects, that will I’m sure, delight all
levels of Rugby community from Juniors through to our die-hard Sea of Blue supporters.
➢ It will also set a plan for a foundation that in conjunction with the development of an Asia Pacific competition in 2019, will see WA strongly positioned to retake our place in the Super
level of competition in whatever form that may take post 2020.

    7. Rugby Development operations:

➢ This year will see a revised and enhanced approach to rugby development that with the
support of both Minderoo and Rugby Australia will see the delivery of Rugby development
activities at a broader range of schools across WA and the metro area.
➢ This will be supported by a program that links to and directly assists Junior clubs to
potentially welcome new players to your club.
➢ The mode of operation and structures for this program are being refined and this requires
multiple levels of stakeholders to be engaged with before we can announce more details on this exciting program.

    8. So, in summary we simply offer that at this early stage of the year for Rugby in WA there are a number of very positive and exciting developments that will clearly assist in sustaining and growing the rugby community in the state despite the adversities that befell us last year. Please be patient with us as we evolve the planning and important details, before we share these in more specific details. With the holiday season just past, we are sure you can understand that spending a little more time in planning will assist us in all in ensuring 2018 is a bright and positive one for Rugby Union in the state.

Isn't this the second time the long promised meeting has been postponed?

Yes it is Fulvio. A lot of water has gone under the bridge since early December and there is still more to come. No point having a workshop until all the pieces of the jigsaw are in place and it is clear what the landscape looks like. All good things come to s/he who waits......

Good to see you talking about the IPRC in positive terms again Hansie. However the letter describes it as a foundation for WA re-entering Super Rugby after 2020 - what would that mean for the competition if that happens?
    A) it is discontinued after 2 years
    B) it continues without the Force
    C) it merges with Super Rugby

Obviously potential participants would want to know.

Really needs to be B or C, doesn't it, otherwise we're doing the same thing to the other teams that was done to us.

I honestly can't see how rejoining Super rugby is somehow the goal from all this. What will have changed, that exactly the same outcome won't happen again the moment they think there is some money to be saved or the Waratahs/Reds suck some more? The ARU has demonstrated clearly that they can't be trusted on any level; to run a fair competition, treat all participants equally or even with common respect. Why on earth would we want to sign up again?

WA gets an alternative, any alternative, we should focus entirely on making that into everything we need and want. Leave the rest to fester, because they aren't going to change.

Couldn't have said that better. While ever the current governance system is stacked in favour of the inner Sydney shysters WA needs to keep at arms length if possible.

Alison is right, we need to put a few pieces of the jigsaw in place, so that any meeting covers as much as is possible. With respect to the IPRC, my opinion is that in 2 years time the new Super Rugby Comp will be made up of N.Z. Australian and Indo pacific teams. Right now if we can start integrating with Indo Pacific we get the Jump ahead of the rest.

lets look at some obvious facts:

The broadcast agreement as it stands, funds Super Rugby and it is as good as it gets. Whether we were still part of Super Rugby or not in 2020 Foxsports will reduce their outlay by a bunch.

By engaging with Asia - pacific - Hodgo and the Minderoo team have already been looking at funding resources. Imagine this: Foxsports had about 3.0mil ( My estimation only) viewers watching the last Super Rugby Final live. I believe a typical Rugby match that ...say...included a Chinese team would probably have 20 million viewers. Ask Foxsports what they would prefer?

And the only reason SANZAAR got the money it got from the 2016-20 broadcast deal was because the UK broadcaster came on board at the last minute - through Murdoch, of course. I can’t see that happening again under the current SuperRugby format. Compared to the NH competitions, SuperRugby is a snorefest and surely can’t be a viable investment for any broadcaster.

It wouldn’t surprise me if we heard about the kiwis getting in touch secretly to Suss out about putting a team or 2 in the IPRC before the poo hits the fan with the other comp. Pretty sure you wouldn’t want to go into negotiations with a bunch of knobs who have just helped to bring down more of the audience.

Super Rugby in 2018 is a dead horse.

It will be the same crap it was last year only with 3 less teams.

None of us are going to watch it because there is no Force, and the only reason we watched any of it last year was to watch the Force.

The more I think about it the more I believe that the dicks in Sydney did us a favor. We got the chance to get out of SuperRugby before it become the embarrassment of Rugby worldwide.

With Hodgo and the Midaroo team we have the opportunity to be the creators of the next big thing in World Rugby. In 2020 I honestly believe that a whole plane load of Rugby "Administrators" from the East Coast will fly all the way to Perth and beg to be a part of the next expansion of IPRugby. I just hope that Hodgo, Michael Lynagh and John Welborn can keep a straight face throughout the meeting.

It appears that Sky are toning down their rights deals offering across the board and waiting for BT to implode as they paid far too much for the Champions League.

Sky have lost the Champions Cup to BT and they are about to lose the Irish component of the Pro 14 (which brings in the viewers) to Eir Sports.

I have tried to explain to paid employees and shills like TWAS that Super Rugby is schedule filler for Sky. The Force home games come on at lunch time and they have lost games from SA due to the Kings and Cheetahs being cut/moved. That's perfect leading in to the local European Rugby and the Jaguares home match. Non stop Rugby from 6am to midnight. Cutting sides brings back the big gap between matches.

The RA bang on about arvo June tests yet they can't get a series sponsor prime time tv slot would help with that and the UK/Irish market that kicks in the extra money are televising the matches at 6am. There will be words said from Ireland if all three June tests are 6am kick offs.

Better to keep the Kiwis out of it for now, until Perth can create an undivided supporter base for its team.
