Former Wallaby Rod Kafer signs on for new ARU high performance role

    July 18, 2017 9:43am|

THE Australian Rugby Union has appointed former Wallabies playmaker Rod Kafer to a project role within its high performance department, where he will lead the facilitation of an elite coach development program.

Kafer, a 12-Test Wallaby who tasted Rugby World Cup, Tri Nations, Bledisloe Cup and Super Rugby success, will begin in the role immediately by co-ordinating the newly constructed national coaching advisory panel.

Considered one of the most astute thinkers in the game, Kafer will balance his ARU high performance role with his commitments with Fox Sports.

“As most know, we currently have many important priorities we need to address to improve the game,” Kafer said.

“Our challenge is to ignore all of them and only focus on the critical few priorities that will lead to long-term success and improve our prospects of winning consistently, at every level.

“Coaching is a critical priority that we must improve, at all levels.

“We must ensure that best practice at the elite end of the game flows to all coaches and players from the top to the bottom.

“That is a sure path to improvement and a critical investment in the game’s future.

“Every player and coach has a part to play in developing future Wallabies, Wallaroos and Olympians, and the more resources we provide to improve those players the better our future will be.

“We have already started on it and I can’t wait to see where we get to.

“It’s a privilege to be joining the ARU and trying to make a difference, rather than just voicing an opinion on it, as many of us do.”

The Wallabies have slipped to No 4 in the world rankings after losing to Scotland in June while all five of their Super Rugby teams had losing records this season and overall went 0-25 against New Zealand teams.

“Rod is a fantastic acquisition into Australian rugby and has shown a genuine willingness to be involved in shaping the way forward to achieve on-field success across our programs,” ARU general manager of high performance Ben Whitaker said.

“Rod’s rugby intelligence is well known and he is one of the most respected voices in the game.

“He will be able to work with our elite coaches to identify opportunities for important learning and development.

“This is an area of high performance that has been collectively prioritised and we have been able to design a model for it to be delivered via a centralised system.

“Rod will challenge and support how we are developing our elite coaches and teams and we believe his personality and approach is exactly what we need to drive winning performance.”

In his new role, Kafer will work closely with Australia’s professional coaches at Wallabies, Wallaroos, sevens and Super Rugby level to build individual coaching capabilities, with an emphasis on creating a national unity of purpose.

As a player, Kafer was the first to taste success in all of the major southern and northern hemisphere tournaments, claiming a Heineken Cup and Premiership title with English club Leicester a year after winning the winning the Super Rugby crown with the Brumbies.

Since returning to Australia in 2005 he has been an integral member of the Fox Sports rugby commentary team, covering Test matches, Super Rugby and sevens tournaments as well as providing expert analysis on Fox Sports’ weekly rugby magazine shows.

So we now have a TV analyst coaching the coaches. Didn't he once try his hand at coaching and decided it wasn't for him.
Another great decision from the ARU.

As if this qualifies him for anything ... it's not just incredible, its laughable.

With MacQueen & Dwyer's experience of so much more coaching, why are they not brought into play ...

So looking forward to see how the games evolves Baa Baa's v Wallabies plays out with their new coach !

Support the ARU bullshit and you have a job.
A good coaches coach is someone who has been coaching successfully for a number of years.
Kafer gives good analysis but many others could do the same.

While the premise is positive and one minor step of the rebuild the ARU desperately need i can't go past Kafers record as a coach. What was it? 2 years in England before he quit saying it was all too hard for him. Kafers role on Foxsports also worries me. He is paid to analyze the past. Anyone can do that. Will he be able to innovate like is required or will it be a token appointment to a video review position to keep telling us what went wrong last week? That is afterall the primary skill he is bringing to the role, not coaching experience.

Good idea in theory - the strength of the coaching structure in NZ is it's deliberately coordinated to ensure the expertise is passed from the top right through to the grassroots level. That just doesn't happen here.

However I'm not sure what makes Kafer the one for the job.

So it will all be even more friendly when Cheiks and the crew appear. Touch of the Eddie McGuires "what conflict of interest?" .

Sad thing is it's a new job for one of the boys who already has a job. There'll be no change if we don't get some other eyes onto the job. Richard Graham should be coming up for the sack soon, he'll need a job. Anything coming up?

That position already exists, therefore grey will keep it. Brain-dead will take up a yet to be created role written especially for him which pays absolutely no heed to his skill set. It'll probably be national director of excellence in rugby strategy.
