NRL Nines won’t push Rugby Tens out but Brisbane could host both

DUCO Events say they are highly unlikely to relocate the fledgling Global Tens rugby tournament to bring the NRL Nines to Brisbane.

Duco director Dean Lonergan said the inaugural Tens event at Suncorp Stadium last weekend — in the first year of a four-year deal — had been a raging success and was set to stay in Brisbane.

There was some speculation last week that Duco might swap the Nines and Tens given the popularity of the Auckland event was waning and Brisbane’s peerless track record for supporting rugby league.

Lonergan said today it was “probably time to go elsewhere’’ with the NRL Nines and mentioned Brisbane, Perth and Melbourne as possible venues to replace Auckland.

I don't see how they can have them on back to back weekends in Brisbane, based on what i saw last weekend, and what you see progressively during these weekend long events, Sandcorp wouldn't take it if it's 2 weekends anything remotely like the ones we have just had up here!

that and there would potentially be corporate competition between the 7s as well as the 9s & 10s having them all in Australia on potentially back to back weekends.

There was another idea floated about moving the 9s to sometime during the rep season, but that would rule out a load of star players.

How big of a risk would it be to have it played in Perth? presumably it would be at the new stadium, so not a purposely built rugby ground.

the 10s has also only been confirmed to be held in Brisbane, nothing on when it will be played next year. Another article i read said that it might be folded into a "window" during this proposed global season that world rugby are apparently releasing next year.

If the 9's doesn't move to Brisbane it will be in Melbourne as there has been interest in bidding for the tournament from the Victards.

Good old Victoria, always keen to buy a good idea from anywhere else in the world rather than come up with something original!

All I've got to say is "Melbourne Tour"

Can a Mungo tour be sanctioned by the Grand Poobah?

You do worry if they'd cannibalise each other - especially as the NRL Nines and the Sydney 7s are on the same weekend at the moment.
