Pretty sure The NZRU signed a 3 year deal with the Wellington organisers only last year, even though the Wellington city council withdrew funding for it.

Should have moved it to Forsyth Barr Stadium in Dunedin.

Got that right - it had the lowest attendance of all of the World Series events last year.

They already have the Nines which is still getting great crowds (and probably helped kill Wellington).

The Wellington crowd figure is courtesy of the same people who do the "crowd" counts for GWS!

Yeah but either way it's pretty piss poor. Regardless of any deal they have to move it.
Otherwise I'd wager NZ will lose the event. In a market that's only growing in popularity there would be no shortage of other countries to take it to.
Those countries would probably be cheaper to stage the event in as well in terms of logistics. The Sydney leg can back up/come before the asian legs and still be relatively as economical.
