It's hard to see how such a merger could be done without agreement of the privately owned Rabble. To get that they'd be asking for more concessions. They've already had more than a whole convention of pensioners.

A loss of any Aus team is disappointing and doesn't help the game. I really hope the ARU are preparing to use the left over dollars to grow the NRC into a true second division for Aus.

That said moving Australia's best performing team to one of the largest potential sporting markets isn't a bad idea.

And we are in, as others have said even if the Force weren't in financial trouble we would love to have that connection to the team we love.

    Old Article, but a goody

The Australian Rugby Union has given the Melbourne Rebels’ private owner Andrew Cox financial support worth more than $6 million for five years to stop the bleeding from a club that has cost the game between $15 million and $20m since its inception.

Because the deal is front-end loaded, it is understood the Rebels are being paid $2.6m for 2016, the initial year of the deal, but that payments are reduced considerably in value over the remaining four years.

The other four Australian Super Rugby clubs — the Waratahs, Brumbies, Queensland Reds and Western Force — are allocated $1.7m a year for the five-year term of December’s $285m broadcast agreement with Fox and Ten, rising by $50,000 a year. This is over and above the $3.9m that all five clubs, Melbourne included, were allocated last year under the previous broadcast deal to run their club and fund their players.

Old article but i wonder if we would be eligible for the same $6.2 million deal with the ARU if we raise the money?

Still find it hard to believe how much money has gone into keeping the Rebels afloat.

Hi all I might be heading in the wrong direction but as mentioned above about the merger of Ponies and Rabel...Larkem leaving at the end of 2017 and in player movements some big names also moving on.. The ponies management has been a bit casual in its finances.. Maybe there is some truth in it

    Just found this post http://www.theage.com.au/rugby-union...eviceType=text

Wests Scarborough 1st Grade juggernaut has played finals rugby each and every year since its inception and continues this remarkable feat yet again this season and unbelievably it's still rolling on and as an added little circle jerk for the masses Wests actually hold the record for the current longest unbroken finals record.

Planet rugby is saying these certificates will only be valid for one year.
    Plugs the petition though

    [quote]
The Western Force are taking a radical route to keep their long-term future alive by giving fans the option to own a part of the franchise.

Following a strategy used by NFL team, the Green Bay Packers, and international football giant FC Barcelona, the Force is offering 5000, 1000 Australian dollar ownership certificates, that will be valid for a year, a move that could raise 5 million dollars.

The Force’s financial struggles have been well-documented and in conversations about the Super Rugby’s structure moving forward, the West Australian team has been touted as a potential casualty of any change.

One of the key arguments in speculation around the Force’s prospects of being cut from the Australian Super Rugby conference after next season, in a bid to make the tournament more competitive and cost effective, is a lack of local support for the team.

This latest move is one aimed to disprove that notion, the latest in a number of fan initiatives in recent weeks to try and keep the club out of danger.

Fan owners will have voting rights and power of approval over the reappointment of crucial positions within the franchise and a say in match day activities.

They would also receive discounts on their own memberships and registration fees in local rugby.

Rugby Western Australia President Hans Sauder said they wanted to engage the grassroots in order to keep the franchise alive.

"The introduction of the Western Force into the Super Rugby competition took the profile and interest in the code in Western Australia to a whole other level. We hope that Western Australians will join us once again as we fight to save the Western Force," he told Australian Rugby website.

New Force coach David Wessels said any potential exclusion from Super Rugby would be a ‘disservice’ to the state.

"We hope our fans get behind this initiative because Western Australia losing the opportunity to participate in the toughest and highest profile international provincial sporting competition in the world is a disservice to anyone who loves sport in Western Australia, not just rugby," he said.

Force fans started a change.org petition last week to ensure their club’s survival, amid Super Rugby reviews, a document that has been signed by more than 1800 people at the time of writing, including at least one high-profile former Force and Wallabies representative.

SANZAAR executives are set for a meeting in mid-November about the future of Super Rugby and possible conference changes in the longer term.

While it is not believed a final call will be made on the look of the competition from 2018 onwards at that meeting, the Force is clearly trying to make sure any decision is not a fait accompli.

I can't see if being a yearly payment otherwise it's just a glorified new form of membership.

You'll be advocating a vote for Trump with that kind of rhetoric.

Im impressed. Its the first sign of lateral thinking. Its a shame the thinking is small. A stepping stone. A fight for survival was needed to force a think tank on solutions. I have 100 more for them if they're interested.

    One year?

I thought it'd be more like buying shares in the team

1000 bucks to own the force for a year is a waste, and doesn't hold the ARU to any kind of standard, if they were shares, and the first 800k goes to buying the if back, the ARU would need to buy the shares to close the organisation down. Viola the force have a meaningful stick to match with their 5 million dollar carrot.

And the shareholders have some genuine control. Along with a dividend if the company is profitable (which might not necessarily mean success on the field)

$1000 for part ownership may be a bargain depending on ROI (return on investment)
If they want 1k and there is no value in it and you have to fork out again in a year...why would you. If it turns into a clusterfuck of 5000 committee members squabbling over why they can't have free drinks at the bar, it will turn into a disaster

They are wrong, They are for life and if you read The West story it says you can't sell them to anyone else but can bequeath them to family
