DANE HAYLETT-PETTY AWARDED 2016 NATHAN SHARPE MEDAL

DANE HAYLETT-PETTY AWARDED 2016 NATHAN SHARPE MEDAL
By David Berrie on Sat 6th August 16

Western Force fullback Dane Haylett-Petty has claimed the 2016 Nathan Sharpe Medal by a record margin at HBF Stadium at the club’s annual awards night in Perth.

After an outstanding season in the blue jersey the newly capped Wallaby finished with a club record 449 votes – shattering the previous record of 378 votes set by Ben McCalman in the 2015 season. Haylett-Petty polled the most votes in five of the team’s 15 matches including tallying an incredible 64 from a possible 69 votes against the Cheetahs in Round 15.

Topping the competition in carries and run metres the fullback’s incredible year was also recognised by the ‘Sea of Blue’ taking home the Members’ Most Valuable Player.

The Nathan Sharpe Medal is determined by each member of the match day 23 voting for their peers on a 3, 2, 1 basis.

After finishing third in 2015 Haylett-Petty (449) won by a record margin ahead of previous winners Matt Hodgson (168) and Ben McCalman (150) who finished in second and third place respectively.

Flyhalf Jono Lance (140) led the count after four rounds before going down with an injury that kept him on the sidelines until Round 15 before returning for the final three games of the season to finish in fourth place.

Continuing the great night for the Haylett-Petty family, younger brother Ross was awarded the Rising Star Award after a breakout season, while Marcel Brache’s ‘team first’ attitude and leadership was recognised with the Geoffrey Stooke Force Man Award.

Congrats. The numbers reflect what a no-brainer that was. Top effort with limited game time from Lance too.

Fantastic to have such a great turn-up at the Awards night.

    All worthy recipients EXCEPT.......

Very disappointing that the Geoffrey Stooke Force Man Award was awarded to a squad member who evidently let himself and the franchise down due to his own involvement in what was deemed unacceptable behaviour after the Cheetahs game in Bloemfontein.

The Force Man award is presented as an "inspiring award for the player who fulfils all six Force Man attributes both on and off the pitch. The attributes are: tough, motivated, team player, respectful, honest and showing initiative."

IMO this undermines the past efforts to establish team standards and the respect which was mentioned a lot last night and is a slap in the face for all worthy past recipients. What message does it send to the very young squad?

The fact that is was the acting coach's choice, when this happened on his watch, raises serious concerns about his suitability for the head Coach position. Those who were involved should not have played against the Stormers.

The new Head Coach has an even harder road ahead.

And what's going on with the Western Force and Matt Hodgson?
Foundation Squad Member and current Team Captain appears to be struggling to get his contract extended, despite our being told that it was a "done deal" 2 months ago, and doesn't even get a chance to comment on the 2016 season at the Awards Night???
It's generally accepted that we struggle to attract good players to Perth yet there appears to be little reward or recognition for those who have remained loyal to the franchise and still have so much to offer the playing group and rugby in WA.

Mark said during the members forum on Wednesday that Hodgo is going to be playing for the force next year, but he explained that there was a bit of a inherited complication which they had to negotiate through which I suspect has something to do with Hodgo still playing but also taking on some form of an assistant coaching role for the future

I hear they won't offer him the dosh he was expecting and promised. Pay him now and get him signed up for Christ's sake.

At the members forum Mark said the hurdle had been "an inherited" one. If what you're saying is right, perhaps it was Foles who promised the dosh and as he's now gone they are trying to undo it.

That is my understanding but don't they realise the effect Hodgo leaving would have on not just the team but the fan base.

Then they're all a bunch of f**king idiots who are incapable of "reading the room" (and they've proven they are only good to run an organisation into the ground) and need to go as well.

Marcel Brache was demoted from the leadership group.

    Was he? When? Why?

    Sssssshhhhh!
He's already crucified him in his mind. Getting the nails out and him off the cross would be a lot of work.

Just after the Bloemfontein made the press I'd heard from a number of people that the group was bigger than just Pek and DHP and included Marcel.

Pek and DHP copped fines as they are Wallabies.

If you recall after this Luke Morahan was made Captain with Jono Lance and Ian Prior as VC's.
I don't think that any of these guys had been in the leadership group previously.

Last night after the awards I encountered a number of groups of fans who were expressing their surprise by this award.
