Well done to the girls, well deserved hard fought win. They have spread the name of rugby across Australia.

You know, like tennis, golf, rugby 7s. Now you mention it though, hockey has a World Cup every year, doesn't it? get it out of the Games, I say

UNLESS It's only amateurs taking part.
    I thought women's 7s was amateur?

Dear Lord, if you give us back Johnny Cash, we'll give you Justin Bieber.

My mistake - it's just the salaries that are amateur ...

The top 3 or 4 players earn between $80,000 and $90,000 a year, the lower end players around $35,000. Squad average of $55,000.

I've been stewing on this for a while, but your logic is flawed
There is a swimming World Cup, but swimming is allowed in?
There is also a glut of regional tournaments such as the pan-pacs and others that you could consider regular international tournaments
Two different athletics world championships, but Aths is allowed in? Along with a similar number of events in the same vein as swimming.

By this logic, equestrian would be one of the very few sports which qualify (based upon my very brief google I couldn't find a world championship or anything like it

That being said, you could remove almost everything that is currently on the program and add a whole heap of new sports to the list
Jai Alai would be a candidate, no regular international competitions but it is an international sport (Ok Philippines and america, but that's still international right?)
We could try a whole bunch of "new" sports that are played by multiple countries, but have no world championships, obviously not Baseball, NFL or Basketball, but Gaelic Football, AFL, Polocrosse (actually scrap that, I just googled and there is a world cup)

We could go back to the old system of amateur sports only, but that would knock out almost everything as well, given that most athletes, swimmers and various other sports (I think it varies by country) are professional now.

I think the system is pretty OK as it is, I certainly can't think of a better one (unless we introduce a drug cheats version for anybody who has ever tested positive, that would be cool, watching the enhanced 100m butterfly!)

Unfortunately winning an "enhanced" swimming event would probably require you to have flippers and gills transplanted.

I actually enhanced my real thoughts in a fishing expedition. My apologies for causing all of that research.

Let's put it this way: I won't be watching the Olympic tennis or golf. I may take a passing interest in the 7's but am not impressed in the Olympic tournament being any different to any of the plethora of lead-up tourneys. I am not interested in the football/soccer either, but then I don't watch much of that anyway. Swimming in week 1 & track & field in week 2 will do me fine.
