Waratahs express interest in Jarryd Hayne

    By Adrian Warren
    July 1, 2016, 12:24 pm

NSW Waratahs coach Daryl Gibson says he would definitely be interested in getting Jarryd Hayne to his Super Rugby franchise, but they have had no discussions with Semi Radradra.

Hayne and Radradra both returned from Fiji on Thursday night, with Hayne's future undecided after his bid to make the Fijian Olympic sevens rugby team.

The code hopper quit NRL club Parramatta to pursue a dream to play in the NFL and played a few games for the San Francisco 49ers in 2015-2016.

He left that code to try to make the Fijian sevens rugby squad, one of the medal favourites at the upcoming Rio Olympics.

Hayne played in the final leg of their successful World Series title defence in May without making an impact and returned home on Thursday for treatment on a hip injury.

He has yet to reveal his sporting home for 2017, but a return to rugby league or a switch to rugby union are considered his most likely options.

"He's a talented player and we'd be interested, everything is depending on our salary cap of course," Gibson said from Tokyo on the eve of the Waratahs' Super Rugby match against the Sunwolves.

The Australian Rugby Union has helped entice several players across from rugby league by topping up the salary paid to those converts by the Super Rugby franchise of their choice.

However, that was usually on the basis of those recruits being eligible to play for the Wallabies, which under current rules Hayne is not.

Hayne effectively made himself ineligible for Wallaby selection by playing for Fiji in London.

Asked if the Waratahs could afford Hayne without an ARU top-up, Gibson said: "Most of the top 20 or 30 players, I don't know the absolute numbers, but certainly most of the players are all topped up to some degree.

"He has commercial value and the ARU would be keen to maximise that and get the best players playing our code."

Radradra is not on the Waratahs' radar, despite reports suggesting the contracted Parramatta NRL winger is considering a switch to a French rugby union club.

"We've had no discussions with him," Gibson said.

The only way this will happen is if Hayne takes a monster pay cut. He will be playing in the NRL next year.

Hayne hurt himself long term by playing for fiji. Now the ARU wont want to touch him because they can't offer him a top up. They would have bent over backwards to fit him into the tahs backline. He will end up in french rugby.

We have a marquee slot available, would he be worth the risk?

Based on raw talent I would say yes but with the reported signing of Curtis Rona and with DHP and Morahan in the back 3 there doesn't appear to be room unless one of the four mentioned players moves to the centres.

What, at the Tahs? It would be funny if it weren't probably true!

I think Hayne himself would make a decent rugby Centre, certainly a 13 if not a 12.....unfortunately, the risk is that he won't make the transition fast enough. Everybody says 13 is the most complex position defensively in rugby and it's probably the one which is most different from league.

But he's learned how to hold his own in the NFL, he's certainly got the size, speed and footwork and, if he gets his head around the position, could be the find of the century given that the ARU will pay most of his salary.

There have been a few leagies that have done well in union, but also quite a few that have bombed. Too much of a risk for the Force. He should, in theory, excel, but who knows Henry Paul, Benji Marshall etc all tanked.

My feeling is that Hayne will expect a motza, stick around for 1 year then move on somewhere else for big money. Don't think the ARU should throw a lot of money at someone who just wants another feather in his cap.

Henry Paul tanked? If tanking includes 7 seasons at Glouscester and Leeds and 6 Tests for England you're on the money, I spose.

Apparently he's eligible to play next weekend (or maybe on Wednesday night ). He's not a currently regestered RL player so June 30 deadline doesn't affect him.
Parra may not have much room under the cap ATM though. Easts' salary sombrero should have no such obstacles.

Good call on the Roosters endless salary cap.

Last Wednesday I read an article saying that the Eels we're going to try and talk Foran into singing elsewhere to free up cap space so I guess that's a problem they won't have.
