THE Australian women’s sevens team have won another world series title, firming their favouritism for a gold medal at the Olympic Games in Rio.

World series leaders Australia demolished Canada 29-0 in the cup final in Brazil, scoring five tries in a dominant display in wet and wild conditions in Sao Paulo.

Evania Pelite opened the scoring when she scorched away for a long range try, before Alicia Quirk jinked over late in the first half as Tim Walsh’s side took a 14-0 lead into the halftime break.

Emilee Cherry killed the contest by scoring the third try as Australia reacted quicker than the Canadians to claim a loose ball.

Ellia Green — who has emerged as perhaps the world’s best women’s sevens player — made it four, displaying power as well as speed to navigate through some weak tackling.

Nicole Beck completed the rout by finishing some slick handling in the wet.

“We put in a lot of hard work over Christmas after Dubai and it paid off,” said Australian captain Shannon Parry.

“Both teams had wet weather practice and it went well.

“Everyone knows it’s a long way to Rio but I’m very proud of our girls.

“We’re just about putting good performances together on our way to Rio.”

Australia lead the world series on 40 points, ahead of New Zealand and Canada who share second on 28.
