Football overlooked as Stadium Australia wins Perth stadium deal

The State Government has overlooked a bid by football to operate the new Perth Stadium.

Premier Colin Barnett today announced that Stadium Australia Operations, operator of Sydney’s ANZ Stadium, had been chosen as the preferred operator.

The decision is a shock for WA football. It's consortium was not even listed as a fallback.

The battle for the operator contract was fought out between Perth Stadium Management, a vehicle of the WA Football Commission in partnership with Live Nation, Ticketmaster and Delaware North; AEG Ogden, which manages Perth Arena among its global portfolio of venues; Nationwide Venue Management, a division of Spotless which runs the Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre; and Stadium Australia Operations, operator of Sydney’s ANZ Stadium.

Sport and Recreation Minister Mia Davies said AEG Ogden was also approved as reserve respondent, in the event the State Government could not conclude negotiations with Stadium Australia Operations.

Sensitive commercial negotiations between the State Government, West Coast Eagles, Fremantle Dockers and AFL have been on hold until the operator is appointed.

The Government originally hoped to have user agreements for AFL matches to be played at the stadium concluded last year but talks were put on hold in the lead-up to Christmas.

In a statement, the Premier Colin Barnett said the State Government would enter into exclusive negotiations with Stadium Australia Operations to become the operator, following a three-month evaluation period and subsequent approval by State Cabinet.

Mr Barnett said Stadium Australia Operations' proposal offered the best value for money and an operating approach which put fans first.

"A key feature of the bid was the depth and breadth of proposed events to be held at Perth Stadium and the strategies to secure them," he said.

"The 60,000 seat Perth Stadium will be a world-class venue and it is fitting that a world-class operator is appointed," Mr Barnett said.

The operator will be responsible for the day-to-day management of the stadium and sports precinct, including catering, securing event content, event management and ticketing.

Ha-ha. But even that won't cut for me. Might turn off the 2sm stream for a while and listen to 91.3 for a while on the way home though. 😈

Well given they run a profitiable stadium in Sydney they were always in with a shot.
Fantastic that the WAFL/AFL's consortium wasn't shortlisted. sucked in them

Now, Colin, knock down Subiaco oval super quick.

We'll have the AFL coming cap in hand to RugbyWA asking if they can hire Perth Oval for their WA fixtures.

They might be refused because they may stuff up the grass surface, but ...

Oh come off it mate! That would look totally ridiculous. What would they do, put a net under the cross bar and give 6 for a soccer goal? Next you'll be suggesting they add a couple of extra uprights and award points for missing a goal. Pffft!

Prediction: a GST starved State Government will find it very hard to keep from selling the Subiaco Oval site. They will likely make a take-it-or leave-it offer to the WAFC to forego the management rights they still have post 2017(?). The WAFC will have to negotiate a deal with Stadiums OZ. They will be the major tennant and should get a good deal as they should get 40,000 plus at plenty of matches. The Mungo clubs in Sydney are well paid to play at Homebush and they play in front of 3 men and a dog most games.

Whilst the WAFC owns the licences for West Coast and Fremantle it's the AFL that do the fixturing so the AFL can just fixture the clubs at the new ground. The WAFC can hang onto their lease of Subiaco if they want, a major asset with no revenue stream. They can huff and puff all they want but they will fall into line.

On a side note Mike Fitzpatrick who sits on the AFL commission also sits on the board for the company that won the bid.

A couple of blow-in Campbelltown Bogans I spose. Wouldn't be from Silvertail land. They are afraid of falling
off the edge of the world if they cross the Spit Bridge

Can't refer to it as "Perth Stadium" because the plonkers have left a section of the community out, who won't be able to use the bloody ground.. The whole thing is a shmozzle..

I have to say it goes against the grain to have some bunch in the East managing and profiting from a stadium we built, but the all out dummy spit by the WAFC probably gives a pretty good indication why. Comes across as a bunch happy to sit back and run a public asset as a private piggy bank, outraged that someone might actually expect better. Nonetheless, they will hardly be toothless come negotiations - the stadium economics will be a train wreck without the footy. Just hope we don’t end up funding them while money flows east.
