If you think bugs no longer exist in 7 after all the service packs and windows updates.....well you don't know Microsoft very well!

Windows website says extended support for Windows 7 will expire in 2020?

If past efforts are any indication, they will not support the next-to-last Os actively. They might change their usual policy based upon the disaster that was Windows 8, but I wouldn't hold my breath.

Extended support could mean anything, from full active development of service packs down to leaving the existing stuff on windows update but not following up on any new issues.....knowing ms, I would err on the side of the latter.

My laptop is 6 years old and I only boot it up when I need to do some word processing or fiddle with some photos that I've taken. I do most of my web browsing on my iPad these days.

Having spoken to one of the programme coordinators at work in ICT there's no plans for DoE to upgrade to anything beyond Windows 7 anytime soon so I figured I'm fine as well. The department only upgraded to Windows 7 20ish months ago.

I haven't upgraded yet because my laptop is owned by my company and my old laptop recently died. I plan on buying a Surface soon that will obviously run it. From those I know that have it like Jono love the new mail & calendar. Also they like the personal assistant Cortana.

It's not even at 10% market share yet so I don't think there's any big rush to upgrade and it may be better to wait a while because it will only become more polished.

    Windows 7 = 55.68%

    Windows XP = 10.93%

    Windows 8.1 = 10.30%

    Windows 10 = 9.96%

    Mac OS X 10.11 = 2.99%

    Windows 8 = 2.76%

    Mac OS X 10.10 = 2.23%

Cortana isn't available in aus at the moment.
Am happy for it to stay that way because it's a massive data mining scheme anyway.

From my sketchy knowledge, isn't that what most applications are these days anyhoo? Unless, of course, you understand what to do about stopping such activities.

Was wondering about that; I've got Windows 10 on my laptop, which used to run Windows 8, and 10 seems much quicker. But I hadn't come across Cortana and wondered if I was missing a whole section of 10.

last time I checked they hadn't announced a release date for it over here yet, haven't really paid any more attention to it since then so i may be working off outdated information. Either way I wont use it. I hardly use my laptop anymore as it is, i generally mess about on my phone & use apple TV to listen to Itunes radio. Work just gave me the new S2 tab (and reminded me i fucking hate android OS) so have been sussing that POS out*

*i should clarify, it's nice to use, i just dislike android OS so i'm always going to hate it.

Windows 10 will only be a free upgrade for a limited time, another 6 months I believe.

Personally the upgrade was smooth, put new life into the machines. 3 computers done with no major problems. About the only issue was a couple of setting changes but they were easily fixed.

How big is the Windows 10 upgrade / download? We pay a small fortune for 25GB plan per month & max out most months so would hate to put more pressure on our meagre allowance.
