Sure everyone is aware The Matildas are going well and have made it through to the QF now.

If they, and the Poms win their QF's they'll be meeting in the Semi's!

Mary Fowler's long pass for the first goal, and the precision finish from Cailin Foord will be on highlight reels for quite a while. It really was spectacular. The other one was pretty good too, to be fair.

Friggin hate watching soccer, stepped out to pee and this one happened.

At least I got to see Hayley Raso slot the game winner. Food also had another massive chance before the Raso goal, but couldn't organise her feet to belt it.

Watching France feast on the carcass of Morocco last night, the next hurdle is a big one.

3 days to recover from that is a worry. Not much left in the tank at the end & I was sort of hoping it was heading to a shoot out. Maybe the Poms & Colombia can stay locked up.

I thought the Poms were good, but the Colombians have some real talent

    Well done ladies!

How many penalties were missed! Fu@k me!!!! A nice little SF against the poms to look forward to!

Anyone heard of anywhere that will be showing it big screen in the city? There was talk of getting a big screen up somewhere for the public should they make the latter stages!

I'll be away buy my youngest is hanging out see it on the big screen

Forrest Chase? They had a big screen up and a fenced off FIFA area this weekend. It may be ticketed, though (FIFA charge for everything!)

But if there is an official FIFA area, they may prevent Northbridge Plaza showing the match.

    From FIFA World Cup website:

    Accessing the FIFA Fan Festival™

The FIFA Fan Festival is free of charge and open to everyone. It is possible to exit and re-enter at any time during the official opening hours as long as the venue is not at capacity.

How many times did Fowler miss in ordinary time (far from alone there)? Wasn't going to do the same with her penalty strike - cannon ball!!

From the post match celebrations I would like to hear more about the bench player piggybacking an injured player to the huddle?
I wasn't able to watch live, but assume one of the girls had a leg injury?
If you watch the celebration clip, just before they cut to the French player you will see it.
Even the steady cam operator beat them there!
As much as I love the big name stories (Kerr jersey to girl etc) I think this is as much or more what it is about.

I'm no roundball fan, apart from our two national teams and a casual Champs League & EPL A League watcher when nothing else is on. But the main thing I've noticed from player interviews this WC is their strong team-first mentality. So your observation adds to that and it goes a long towards winning.

Recently listening to Beau Robinson interviewing Gail Miller who was a member of the inaugural Olympic Water Polo Gold Medal Australia won at Sydney.
I forget precise detail now, but that was one of the things they explored and really stood out to me from it.
There was no individual hero worship inside the team, everyone was one single unit. No one put forward for scoring goals to the media etc.
Gail believes this to be a major factor in their success.
In a similar vein, I agree you see it here with this group.
Even in as much as how much attention has been thrown at the Kerr injury/selection, as some commentators say, I believe this has been a calculated strategy to take the media heat away from those playing in the Rounds. This may look like headline grabbing, but my read is it is a selfless act from a class Captain to still have a positive influence on her teammates. Fact is, globally she is a superstar now, probably bigger than in her home State and definitely bigger than any Water Polo player would experience, so she would have had scrutiny anyway. This strategy has allowed the active players to be somewhat protected from what is left of the media's attention.
It will be difficult to maintain/contain now though and may see the Coach take a more prominent place in the media.
