Michael Hooper cited over alleged 'punch'

MENDOZA: Wallaby flanker Michael Hooper could be in danger of missing the Bledisloe Test in Sydney after being cited in the wake of Australia's 34-9 win over the Pumas in Argentina.

Hooper has been put in the book for an alleged strike on Pumas five-eighth Nicolas Sanchez in the 59th minute of The Rugby Championship match at Estadio Malvinas.

Hooper has just set up Dean Mumm on the right wing and was trailing in support as Sanchez appeared to grab his jersey in a bid to hold him back.

Footage then shows Hooper lashing out at Sanchez, swinging around and making contact with the Argentinian playmaker.

A SANZAR statement said Hooper "is alleged to have contravened Law 10.4 (a) Punching or striking, when he made contact with Argentina fly half, Nicolas Sanchez in an incident that occurred in the 59th minute of the match between Argentina and Australia at Estadio Malvinas Argentinas in Mendoza on 25 July 2015."

The case will be overseen by SANZAR duty official Chris Morris. Hooper can plead guilty and have the matter dealt with quickly or the Wallabies may roll the dice and elect to fight the charges.

Hooper has been excellent for the Wallabies over the first two games of The Rugby Championship and his absence would be a substantial blow to their chances against the All Blacks.

The soccer style diving by Argentina has no place in rugby as was seen multiple times across the game.

That looked like a bit of force but was open handed.

IMO Peyper didn't get control of the game and hence the situations arose. The number of breakdown offences by Argentina with no card a prime example.

Argentina should be cited for poor acting.

I actually thought Peyper did an pretty fair and good job, what he allowed one side to "get away" with he also allowed the other. A much better ref than he was a few years ago.

I agree, it is quite obviously professional fouls. And if that is the way they want to play, i do not want them in the super rugby competition.

Someone should give Sanchez a Razzie award. Surprised he didn't roll around clutching at his ankle in a theatrical manner.

Meh, roll the dice Cheika, Hooper is useful as an impact player, but if we lose him, there's plenty who can do what he does.

If it were Pocock, I'd be worried.

Citing teams for play-acting might be an option

Yeah I dunno chibi, he swung, made contact, that's striking....the play-acting is just a cheap and dirty way of getting the TMO to have a look at it.

I'd call it a low grade strike, because it looked like there was intent, but some limited mitigation in the fact that he appeared to be held back....you could argue that he was just trying to push the offending player off and got it wrong.

I don't think that was the case, but it should be argued that way.

Nah, I'm not too concerned about the punching incident, my comment was really about the soccer culture creeping into the game. I agree he swung and made contact, for that matter, Skelton choked someone on the ground; so yeah, that's no biggie with me.
