If that's the reason then it's the most ridiculous eligibility rule there is. AFAIK this is either an ARU or SANZAR rule not IRB one? Nothing to do with internationals. How can anyone be stopped from plying his trade in his home country by excercising his right to dual citizenship or residence? I wonder how a restraint of trade case would go because no such restrictions are on Joe Public. Or is it worded so as to sidestep that by attaching Wallaby eligibility criteria?

I think it's a Wallaby eligibility thing. I don't think the NZ or SA teams have the same restrictions; SA pick players who play overseas anyway. Looking at the NZ Super Rugby teams, the Chiefs have 6 foreign players, the Blues 4 and the others all 5, so they don't seem to have a problem with foreign players.

Mind you, we technically have 10 foreign players in our squad: Heiburg, Van Wyk, Mafi, Stander, Louwrens, Matthewson, Grant, Brache, Masiwera & Nikoro, it's just that only three are foreign internationals

Mafi is NOT a foreign player except under an arbitrary rule imposed by the ARU. He is being restricted from earning a living in his home country if he would otherwise stay. I'm just wondering whether that's legal. It sure doesn't seem fair.

From NEWSCORP papers - Adelaide Advertiser today

"Another week, another round of departures from the Force.

Following our news that Steve Mafi and Junior Rasolea are heading overseas, we can reveal that both Rory Walton and Ollie Hoskins have also signed deals to play with foreign clubs after this season, with potentially even more to follow.

The Force are aware of their roster crisis yet have been contacting more South African players to fill the holes. The Force have the highest percentage of “non-local” players in Super Rugby."

Rory Walton hadn't nailed down playing time so moving on is expected. Hoskins a surprise.

Don't you just love the way they try and put the boot in even when the news is old news. That was on the west online a week or so ago and the Junior story was on here from Scotland.
I'm glad I don't have to pay to read their rubbish.
And yes good luck to them but they weren't going to go any further here anyway.

The franchise with the most non locals is actually the Brumbies.

Maybe we should change our recruiting strategy to the NPC instead of South Africa. The SA strategy hasn't been overly successful and the kiwis tend to play more attractive running rugby which could boost crowd numbers

So who is the development coach for the act?

Perhaps we should get him over here for some training, if he takes over maybe the precious loved one of yours who obviously missed the cut could get a contract with the runners.

I see were you're coming from but do we offer a more attractive destination to a Kiwi or a Saffa?
I think we can afford to buy SA players because they are vulnerable in their own country!
Kiwis on the other hand if they are half good have a damn good chance of getting in to the "squad".
I personally think that scouting the ZA market for up and coming isn't the worst thing we could do. This would give us more time to develop our home grown talent that it seems are now playing in the under 20's etc.
