WA BEGIN SOUTHERN STATES CHAMPIONSHIP TITLE DEFENCE WITH 39-7 VICTORY

Western Australia has started their Southern States Championship campaign with a 39-7 victory over NSW Country in Adelaide today.

WA started well, gaining possession from their own kick off and immediately putting pressure on the NSW Country defence. The Country side found themselves down to 14 men when they received a yellow card less than two minutes into the game for back-chatting the referee.

Nick Jooste put WA on the board when further pressure on the country side forced a penalty and he slotted the goal.

A poor kick receipt by the Perth side lead to NSW Country attacking the WA line and took the 7-3 lead with a try in the ninth minute. WA kicked into gear and started to control the game with some very good tactical kicking.

Nili Fielea took back the lead for WA with a great run through the Country’s defence and with Jooste conversion they were ahead 10-7.

The remainder of the half saw WA in control with tries to Hayden Anderson and Jean-Charl Smith which were both converted by Jooste. Auega Seumanatafu was strong on the ball and earned a penalty with five minutes on the clock which Jooste had no trouble slotting to take the half-time score to 27-7 in WA’s favour.

Country came out stronger in the second half by controlling possession and gaining momentum to prevent WA from playing their game plan

After 20 minutes of a rugby arm-wrestle, WA crossed again through captain Riley Winter before Carl Fitzpatrick crossed in the 31st minute. Tim Koiatu converted the latter and WA ran out 39-7 victors.

WA will take on the ACT on Monday, 23 February and Victoria on Wednesday, 25 February.

What a great win for the WA boys.
Through the 1990's and 2000's NSW Country were a major benchmark for WA rugby.
Maybe a one off, but a win of the size over NSW Country is a big indicator for WA Community Rugby.

WA finished unbeaten for the tournament - beating Victoria 32-27 this afternoon.

Queensland Country: 2 wins, 1 loss
NSW Country: 1 wins, 2 losses
ACT: 2 wins, 1 loss
Victoria: 1 win, 2 losses
SA: Home ground advantage didn't help - 3 losses

WA CLAIMS BACK-TO-BACK SOUTHERN STATES TITLES

The Western Australia Under 20’s have won back-to-back Southern States Championships in Adelaide, following the side’s 32-27 final round win over Victoria today.

For a second consecutive year, the Western Australians finished the tournament undefeated with today’s victory following on from previous wins over NSW Country (39-7) and the ACT (28-24).

Kalamunda flanker Auega Seumanutafa was named Player of the Southern States Championships.

WA Under 20 coach Dwayne Nestor said it was pleasing to see his side continue on from last year’s success.

“Last year we had some outstanding players within the group, while this year was certainly a real team effort,” he said.

“It’s been pleasing to see that across our representative sides we’re developing a real belief and understanding of what it takes to be able to win these games.

“In our squad we have some guys that had been with the team last year, as well as some from the Under 17’s side that won the Junior Gold Cup, and the game management from the squad was outstanding at times.

“The exciting thing is that we still have a number of guys eligible to compete again next year and we’ll certainly be looking to bring another strong team to the championships in 2016.”

In today’s final fixture, a Jerome Te Kanawa try with seven minutes remaining broke a 27-all deadlock and allowed the Western Australian side to complete a clean sweep of the tournament.

First half tries to Hayden Anderson and Angus Taylor helped WA to a 17-15 half-time lead, before two second half tries to Te Kanawa and one to Tim Koiatu allowed them to seal the win and the championship.

An Australian Barbarians side will now be selected from the participating sides in the Southern States Championships, to play NSW, Queensland, Tonga and Fiji in March in Canberra.

One would imagine that he would have every right to be pleased with himself and the team. If that involves his head growing larger then who are you (or we) to criticise? Results on the board can compare pretty favourably to innuendo and rumour, especially if they have no substantiation with fact.
