NZ Rugby bailout Wellington union in bid to save sevens

New Zealand Rugby has come to the Wellington union's financial rescue but has warned the struggling sevens tournament could depart from the capital if current trends continue.

With the Wellington Rugby Union staring at a loss of upwards of $600,000 this year due to unsold tickets to next February's annual tournament at Westpac Stadium, the national body has taken evasive action.

My first reaction was that the NRL Auckland Nines had stolen a lot of the fans but apparently sales outside Wellington are as strong as ever - it's the Wellingtonians that aren't turning up.

A full calendar of events in Wellington is being touted as one reason behind poor ticket sales for next weekend's rugby sevens in the capital.

Just over a week out from the event only 16,000 tickets have been sold, less than half of Westpac Stadium's capacity.

Indoor sevens in Dunedin with all the uni students in attendance might be good.

Plenty of options to move it in NZ

Canterbury - they would come in droves
Dunedin - new indoor stadium - perhaps a first for Rugby 7's and the scarfies love a dress up, just look at the zoo!
Queenstown - massive open festival, they know how to party in Queenstown bro!!
