    Beach 5's

After a successful inaugural season last year, RugbyWA’s Beach 5’s tournament returns on Saturday, 16 November to kick start the Summer Sevens Series. The action-packed abridged format will again take place at the beautiful Scarborough Beach, giving teams the opportunity to have some fun in the sun with their friends. Sunday 16 November will play host to the U16 and U18 competitions, while the seniors will compete for the Beach Eagle and Beach Disco Ball on Saturday, 22 November. The popular tournament saw an impressive20 teams register last year, with the Southern Lions taking out the Beach Eagle, and the Wanneroo Divas claiming the Beach Disco Ball. The shortened version of the game means there are no lineouts or scrums ensuring teams are treated to a fast-paced high scoring affair each time they play. With team sizes reduced from six players to five, competing teams can expect a lot more room to move around the sand. RugbyWA’s Sevens coordinator Nicole Serafini said it’s great to have the exciting tournament back for another year, with both players and spectators set to enjoy the event. “The tournament gives players another fantastic opportunity to play outside the regular season, whilst featuring a fun vibe and party atmosphere,” she said. “We received very positive feedback from both players and spectators about last year’s tournament, who are again keen to take part in this year’s event. “The other exciting aspect to this tournament is that it attracts athletes from all sporting backgrounds. “Last year, we had a number of AFL players try their hand at beach rugby – this year we have a number of hockey players taking part as well. “We found that people love the exciting version of the game and encourage anyone interested in trying rugby to get involved at this fun event.” Each team is restricted to 10 players so teams are urged to register early to avoid missing out. - See more at: http://www.rugbywa.com.au/article/be....qUfcoZGl.dpuf

Wests Scarborough 1st Grade juggernaut has played finals rugby each and every year since its inception and continues this remarkable feat yet again this season and unbelievably it's still rolling on and as an added little circle jerk for the masses Wests actually hold the record for the current longest unbroken finals record.

All those that are aligned with a rugby club in Perth should make sure those that are in charge of thing's that make thing's happen at their club are aware of their responsibilities to rugby in Perth.
It is no secret that I don't agree with some of the way's Rugby WA structure thing's.
There are however some proactive thing's happening and the Scarborough Beach 5's is one of them.
The lack of support shown in this event was a fucken disgrace.
The effort's of the Rugby WA staff and cost to stage this event would not have been cheap.
One 1st grade club, Wests entered 2 teams and Paly put in a mixed social side with a few other teams with no club affiliation to make up the numbers.
It is a bloody disgrace that no other club in Perth saw fit to support this concept which is a bloody great idea with massive potential.
If a club can't get 7 or 8 guy's to have a run around they have got massive problems.
With all the 7's comp's coming up maybe your club if they are staging one should maybe be aware of karma.
    Get your shit together club's.

Disappointing to hear the lack of support for the comp (maybe some karma for rugbywa?). We already sent a team to the Bali 10s and have guys doing summer training and we sent teams to the KK 7s at Wanneroo (no teams from Wests there?). But at the end of the day comps like this are a hit and giggle affair. Ours boys already train 3 nights a week and we have Friday night touch this would be an extra commitment that would be a big ask from our players supposedly on 'off season's.
The bigger problem we face at Kala is getting a committee together to run the place. We currently have no president, no vice presidents, no Secretary, no treasurer etc. This situation is taking priority over a beach 5s slap and tickle fest.

Don't forget the women - Cottesloe beat a Wanneroo-affiliated team in the final...

I agree though - there was entertaining rugby being played in a great spirit, and even with a small crowd there was still a good festival vibe. Hopefully it gets the right promotion and support in future years and we see the amphitheater packed out.

NTT, would a change of date to tie in better with the local club pre-season help?

We have entered the KK 7's which is on the 19th and 20th Dec. Ntt you are not alone in trying to attract volunteers, go on to every local club's webpage and everyone has position's vacant.
Again any club that cannot get 8 player's to support an event has problem's.
Club's should be forced to support these thing's, no lame excuses.
We all need to do our bit to get local rugby up and buzzing.
It's seem's to be the same handful each season.
Some of the larger club's I have never seen at any off season event's ever and that's not right

Rugby is a winter sport - people get burnt out - when does it stop ? Summer is cricket, softball, touch , strength & conditioning. We don't see cricket having off season mini comps all winter.
Westie have you been hacked? Someone from Rugby WA has your password.
Club committees use this time to restock, stocktake , order and plan , sort sponsorship and income streams ( breaking bad Gosnells hotel and scoping holdens in Christmas shopping car parks)
Pull your head in n Westie - start recruiting for your 4th grade so you don't need to default all season.

It's all about getting a vibrancy back into rugby that has been missing and don't worry West's 4th grade will be very very competitive next season and will be playing final's solely and purely due to the outstanding coaching credentials of a certain club man.

I would have gone down to watch but had Cricket yesterday.

I reckon Biege is on the money and that RugbyWA should reschedule the event if they want it to succeed. Having it 2 and a half months after the season has finished is strange timing.

Maybe if RugbyWA actually promoted the event someone might turn up, the only two places I heard about the event was here on TWF and from a TWF member via email during the week. I would have thought something via email from RugbyWA would have come out.

FRESH NATION & COTT GIRLS CLAIM ALCOHOL.THINK AGAIN BEACH 5s

FRESH Nation (men’s) and Cott Girls (women’s) have taken out their respective titles at Alcohol.Think Again Beach 5s at Scarborough Beach on Saturday.

FRESH Nation proved too strong for Wests Scarborough in the final, running out 5-4 winners to claim the Beach Eagle Trophy; while only a try separated the women’s decider as well, with Cott Girls edging out Uprising, four tries to three to lift the Beach Club Trophy.

The Scarborough Beach amphitheatre was again crowded with keen onlookers as 12 teams contested the two divisions at one of Perth’s most iconic beaches.

RugbyWA Sevens Competitions Coordinator, Nicole Serafini said the beach tournament is growing into a key event on the WA Sevens calendar.

“We had a great following for our inaugural event last year, and to have another strong turnout – both in terms of the quality of rugby and number of spectators – is an indicator towards the growing potential of our Beach 5s tournament,” she said.

“The rugby was fast and entertaining, and we had good support from our local players, which is important to the success of these tournaments.

“Congratulations to both Cott Girls and FRESH Nation on taking out their competitions, and we’re already looking at how we can continue to improve the event next year.”

The next Summer Series Sevens events will take place at the KK Invitational (Friday, 19 December to Sunday, 21 December) and the Margaret River Sevens (Saturday, 7 February and Sunday, 8 February). Click here to register your team now.
